Ok so im trying to get this 90 tsi to start. Earlier this week i posted that the car doesn't turn over . I tryed turning it over by hand and it starts turning but the cam gears and timing belt don't move. the crank is moving and so are the belts like the power steering - ac , and so on. Why isn't the timing belt moving? Someone please guide me in the right direction.

Becuase it's f*cked up. It either broke or sheared the teeth off. If it is still nice and tight then it probably sheared it. If it's loose, it's obviously broken. Or you're having issues with the tensioner, although I don't think it would be quite that bad.

your timing belt is broke

I wouldn't crank that thing by hand anymore for some of the valves could be down and they will run into the pistons that are coming up and get bent all to crap ...

Take the cam sprocket cover off and see where you're at for now....

Timing Belt and Crank Sprocket seem like good places to start..

Ive personally had this happen to me twice! The crankshaft sproket ate youe belts teeth(yummy oems goodness)Get a kevlar belt rebuid the head, cause your banging valves if you turn it over, maybe not by hand but good time for rebuild.

your timing belt is either snapped or the teeth are gone. Oil pump seizing is a good place to look like the guy above stated. if that spins freely ( once you get everything apart to take a look ) then next place to look is the tensioner, id look to make sure its in spec, if thats fine then the belt simply failed. Your heads valves are probably screwed. If im rebuilding personally id go with:

new hydrolic tensioner
OEM timing belt ( if you get the kevlar then you can use the belt for 120K miles but youll have to change all the other timing componets at 60k anyways, if your not going for outragious boost then whats the point?) Im sure other guys on the forum will disagree with me but thats my 2 cents
New idol pullys for the timing belt
new water pump while your in there ( assuming that wasnt done within the last 20k miles or 3 years )
and do your self a favor, if you have the balance shaft belt then do that as well, or do the Balance shaft belt delete your choice
As for you head, id rebuild that you can go with a used head but your relying on someone elses info to state that its any good. Your call, odds are that not every valve is bent, or hell maybe no valves are bent but thats the best case senerio.

Im personally one of those guys that goes with the motto, if it aint broke dont fix it, but when it comes to timing componets and clutchs DO IT ONCE AND DO IT RIGHT, even if it costs a little more money

good luck

I couldn't agree more with hitman. I lost a timing belt a few weeks ago and banged a valve. I ended up doing a new head, full gasket set, timing and balance shaft belt, full timing component kit, harmonic balancer and all new drive belt. Perhaps I'm a bit anal but I had it apart and was around the maintenance intervals anyways.
