Well its the time in my build where i need a downpipe, its the only thing i have left to do before i can drive and begin tuning my megasquirt. Im going to have my local exhaust shop build my downpipe, and am wondering what everyone else has done, and what it cost them. Also does anyone use a screamer pipe or do they just run in into the downpipe? I think the idea seems pretty cool but with my log manifold, the wastegate comes out right by the turbo and running them together just looks easier.

I just drove my car a mile down the road with no hood to have a down pipe bade by a local exhaust shop. It cost about $150 and I provided the turbo flange. He welded it to my existing flex pipe. They did a decent job, but the guy said it was a little tricky since it was such a huge angle to bend.

I also run an open wastegate and wouldn't have it any other way. It's basically the sound of power :p. That's probably the number 1 thing people comment on (usually positive) when they see/hear my car.

Do you just leave it open as in no pipe on it running to the ground?

not if you have a vented hood. i ran open wastegate, no dump tube at all for a long time. only thing it did was make the engine bay dirty. but i didnt really have a choice because of how the downpipe was: Vband + 3" mandrel pipe. pics:

oh sorry... a shop didnt do my downpipe so i can't really help with prices. but there are some pics of how mine was.

Thank you, thats just what i was looking for, also do you reccomend having them weld in a bung for the o2 sensor on the downpipe instead of using the one farther down the plumbing under the drivers seat. i plan on going wideband very soon to tune my megasquirt

I recirculated my wastegate back into my exhaust, it was a pain in the ass but it keeps my bay cleaner, cooler, and quieter

I built my DP myself. VBand on the end. 2 bungs, Narrow O2 and WBO2. Cost about $50 since I did myself. Would have been much cheaper if I hadn't used a VBand. That includes the price of the flange on the turbo with the other side of the vband

As far as WGs go, mine's always been dumped, when I had the log and the ram-horn. Log WGwas shooting out toward the passengerwheel well, ramhorn was dropped below the trans. Never got the bay dirty and kept heat away.

that being said.. people that have run dumpless and just open wastegates.. was the sound very loud?

or is it needed to be dumped to quiet the open wastegate sound?

Being dumped out the side sounds good. Always was a fan of that. Wasn't too loud. You can obviously tell it was being dumped, and would see some smoke (if rich). Sound of the turbo, motor, and exhaust were all louder than the dump though. I've seen people add motorcycle mufflers to dump tubes to change the sound. I didn't care about sound, just functionality.

I would NEVER run a dumpless WG. Just asking for problems. I perfer clean and safe.

The only video I have right now that you can kind of hear is from my first turbo setup when I was 8lbs. Nothing special, small t3. Built head. Stock block.

Going up the onramp after my buddy in the IS is done squealing, you can hear my motor get loud. Also about the 1:06 mark I hit the gas for a second or two. You can hear the dump there.

with no dump tube the wastegate is LOUD. its sort of like a PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTT that is louder than the turbo spool. awesome sound IMO

What materails did you use and where did you get them? /Assuming you didn't already have them.

Stainless steel I bought online. Honestly don't remember where. but lots of different places that sell the materials. VBand was on ebay.

O2 bungs were from the same place. Had flanges laying around, but again can be found online or exhaust shops.

Used a basic self-feeding MIG welder I had.

okay well how about this for the sound it makes.:

that's a 3rd gear pull at 22 psi. that noise you hear that sounds like wind going by the camera? yeah the windows weren't open, that's the open dumped wastegate.

the audio and the video seem to have come un-sync'd in photobucket idk why.
