I was actually scrolling around the DSMtuners page and I noticed one of those little ads that says "Mitsubishi Paint Recall" and it took me to this page:
Car Painting | Earl Scheib - Auto Paint Body Since 1937

Yeah I know its earl schieb bleh but I definately know the black mitsubishi cars have a problem with peeling/chipping clearcoat like my car. Very often on the street I see a black mitsubishi car like a 2G and the paint is similar to mine. I always figured hey its a black car it gets hot and kills the clearcoat (which makes me want to buy a white car for my next car but let's not get into that).

Well it turns out that I guess the black Mitsubishi paint is indeed defective. However the site only mentions 2k model Galants, eclipses, etc... I'm sure that 2G eclipses are affected by it as well.

I did a some googling about this and it turns out that Mitsubishi is aware of the clear on the black cars chipping off and are "fixing" some cars. They haven't issued a recall yet but I guess you can take your car to Satan and they will take pictures of your car and send it to Mitsubishi and they will ultimately decided if they will fix it or not.

Here's the chipping I'm talking about if no1 is familiar with it:

I used big picture because in the small one you can't see it so just click the link to see the pic, but notice how the quarter panel the clear is chipping, the roof has almost no clear on it (thank god for sunroof glass!), the hatch, and the wing are peeling. Heh look at my RS in the back the roof paint is starting to fade, mitsu and their weak paint.

So I'm wondering has anyone successfully gotten their car's paint fixed by mitsubishi?

I notice Dodges have the same problem. The early Neons had it really bad, it common to see like a 95 or 96 neon have the actual paint chipping off and you see the primer. Dodge rams I notice have the same problem as our cars. I know I see some other black cars and their paint doesn't look like this and they say they keep their car outside and stuff.

i doubt Mitsu will repaint our cars. they're over 10 yrs old. they may fix the paint on the 2000's models because they're newer and they really did use some crappy paint to save a few bucks.

Yeah thats what I figured about the warranty, I will do more research on this.

I checked on this already. They are offering a stage 1 paint job for close to $900. I forgot the brand of the paint but its not any of the ones they keep in stock. It's the same one they will use for the recall. Only 2000 and up mitsus are eligible for a free paint. 1999 and under is $900 if you can show the paint rotting...

There was a huge class action suit on Mitsu and a manager at some ES shop called up Mitsu and offered to help them out. So he came up with a huge campaign to bring black mitsu owners in.

I can look for the contact if anyone is really interested...actually i found the flyer

I also have a paint "issue" on my 2003 Black Chrysler Sebring. I found out by Maaco there is a class action suite against Mitsubishi for the paint. I found this out by way of the visiting a Maaco to have them look at my paint for an estimate and they told me. I understand it is a class action law suite but they didnt really seem to know anything else about the proceedure to make a claim. There is a like on Auto Body Shop | Collision Center | Car Painting | Auto Body Repair | Maaco on the is called Mitsubishi Paint Peel but it doesnt do anything but ask for your contact info. I sumbitted mine over a week ago and havent heard anything. I have googled this a few times but havent had alot of time to invest in researching this, but this I am getting the impression that Chrysler is paying "some" on these paint jobs but it's not nearly enough to "correctly correct" the problem! I heard a number of 25-50 percent of the estimate, and I also heard they Chrysler is trying to blame wear and tear on this as well. The more milage you have the less they will pay. Dont know if it is true or not. If anyone gets more details on this please contact me directly>I dont know for certain I will be back on this site. [email protected] and I am also on Facebook. My pic is with a gray cat. feel free to add me just let me know that you saw my post.

There is no way a dealership is going to cover a 20 year old car for paint....if so every 20 year old car wouldn't look like $hit.

The clear coat on my red is peeling too, it's called old age.

Two of my buddies have a black car and they look just like this, one worse than the other. My parts car was black and did the same thing. My white 2g no issues. Every black 2g that is not garage kept looks just like that. Its really a shame, the black looks so good. Personally I would let all the clear chip away so my car looks like the Batmobile.

If you want things done right you have to do them yourself.

Nice looks just like mine. The before picture of course. But its true the majority of the black cars have some kind of clear coat cancer. I seldom see a problem with the reds and the whites almost always look great. Bleh shoulda got a white one....

I see so many gallants with terribly faded roofs, but so many of them are over 8 years old so I guess some fading is to be expect but not as much as I've seen

My black 2gb talon is terrible. Its probably worse then all of yours, only has 117k on it and the paint is is fadding every where, even on the sides. All the other 2gs ive seen are near perfect. But black does seem to have a problem. Oh well i will eventually paint it.

so would my black 97 gsx that the paint is all faded/chipping off of be eligible for this? I don't get it is the paint job going to cost $900.00?

This paint thing was a joke. My 3g is horrible and the only way you were going to see any money (the little bit that it was) was if you were dishing out the 4k+ to go get your car repainted.

I was just under the impression mitsubishi just used shitty ####ing paint. 75% of DSMs I see have this issue. probably 70%+ of other mitsubishi vehicles older than 10 years I have seen had this problem. Dark colors having it worse than light colors.

The paint job will cost you whatever it would normally cost you. They would just reimburse you a certain amount of that. You're not guaranteed anything though.

my eclipse is black as well and i have no signs of fading or peeling.

i DO have a few rock chips on the body though because the roads were i live are falling apart from neglect and age.

do you wash your car often? or leave it out in the open exposed to the sun?

My black is fading on my 20 year old car, I should probably sue some one too...

My Talon only has 90k miles on it and it's fading everywhere as well. It was only in a couple spots around the sunroof when I got it, but it has since gotten much worse. It is unfortunately kept outside, so it will only continue to get worse, but I'm repainting it this summer. As far as anyone wanting money from Mitsubishi; good luck. These cars are a minimum of 12 years old and paint fade on a black car of that age is not uncommon.

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor and my car is worst then yours. The roof is all rust, the hood has no clear coat and I'm still loosing the clear coat on the rest of my car, I brought this to Mitsubishi's attention in 2008 or 9 and still nothing just rejection.

2 weeks ago I discovered that the metal under all my seats are rusted and some metal behind the gas and brake peddles, my sister has the same car but in blue and even through her paint is still good her car seats have rust also.

I don't know what to do now any suggestions?

My car has original paint and has no signs of any clearcoat chipping whatsoever. I guess Mitsu got cheap with their paints.

Heh I saw this on 101 freeway the other day when I working, its a 4G with the same cancer

Consider yourself lucky if you have black and yours doesn't look like that yet. Mitsu sure screwed up with the black.

Paintmess isn't there's a rust warranty for you Endeavor? Thats horrible. Seriously mitsu has to be sued for this shoddy quality, I'm just glad mine isn't rusting yet. My RS was starting to rust. But your Endevour and that 4G I saw really does prove that mitsu screwed up with the black. Also saw a co workers 3G had the same problem but he got it repainted. So for now the only cure is a repaint, NON mitsu repaint.
