Hey guys I just picked up a 95 TSi FWD last night. The kid I got it from said he was driving it, and then it just wouldnt go into gear and he had no clutch pedal. When I arrived to pick up the car, I noticed there was a clutch pedal but it felt weird (not really soft but not really hard either). I then open the hydrolic fluid to check it, and it was beyond BONE DRY. I filled it up DOT3, and then tryed to pump the clutch, and hold in to try to get the fluid through the master cylinder. I had him push the clutch and i saw the slave rod moving, but im not sure on if its actually engaging and disengaging? I was able to hold clutch in and shift gears while car is off. Without the clutch we didnt get it to start but I took his word on the motor.

This mourning I came out to the car and saw the fluid was still full, so I took cap off and pushed in clutch and held it for a min and released. The fluid level didnt go down, and now the pedal goes to the floor and when I release it comes up, but just before it lets out all the way, it like pops up last inch or so.

He said prior to this problem, there was no sign of clutch not working as far as grinding into gears or anything. I saw NO signs of clutch fluid in the car by the pedals

Im hoping its something like changing slave or master. What do you guys think? :banghead:

You can easily shift a transmission when the engine is not running regardless of whether the clutch is engaged or not.

To pull fluid through the system back to the slave you will have to perform a bleeding procedure to remove all of the air from the master cylinder, clutch lines and slave cylinder. Simply pumping the pedal will only push and pull the air back and forth in the system.

To inspect the slave you will need the system to be free of air and the black boot removed from the end of the slave. When the clutch pedal is depressed inspect the slave for any obvious signs of leakage around the piston. If there are none inspect under the dash and on the fire wall for a leak from the master cylinder. Also check each clutch line's integrity.

You also after you have bleed the system you need to adjust the master and slave rods for the most pedal travel there is a good video showing how on jacktransmissions on clutch adjustment.

ok i changed out the slave and master cylinder, but didnt adjust the master yet. I just thought of that actually. The noise you here when I push in the clutch is when clutch is towards the floor. I got a video of the flywheel spinning, and you can see the whole tranny moving when my buddy pushes on the clutch

nope not yet. I had 1 missing bolt under the thermostat housing and the bolt that is by the slave cylinder to block was stripped and I pulled out with my fingers. All the clutch pressure is pushing the pressure plate too much and its rubbing. Now I need a longer bolt and I will do washers and a nut and see if noise goes away

the missing bolts will cause the trans to push away from the block when u push the clutch in instead of pushing the fingers in on the pressure plate. you must have all four bolts in, i went through this problem years ago when a friend of mine broke the front ear off the block and stripped the rear bolt that goes into the aluminum trans. the clutch woudnt disengage, i am 99.9% sure that if you fix those bolts and double check the other two it will solve your problem

I'm having the exact same problem. I had fluid inside the car from the master cyl., so i replaced it today and bled it. It still wont go in gear while its running but when I try to start it in 1st gear with the pedal pressed in, it starts to jump forward.

UPDATE:

I was able to start the car in gear (i know this is very bad) and take it around the block. I was able to rev match every gear and they all held boost very well and didn't slip! I still can't get the car back to normal, however. I've been bleeding it all evening. Any idea what else I could try?

Slave cyl. is the next thing I will try. Replaced the Master cyl. early today.

UPDATE: I don't mean to hack someone elses thread but I thought it would kill two birds with one stone. I replaced both cylinders (master and slave) and bled them THOROUGHLY. I can get my car in gear once in a while if I press the clutch pedal VERY hard into the floor. When I can get the car in gear, the car will instantly start to move when my foot begins to leave the floor (making it next to impossible to drive the car). Is my clutch shot or what?

Yes it could be your clutch.

Now dont quote me or anything, but now that you replaced both slave and master, did you adjust the clutch pedal rod on the master? If that dont work still, try to push the clutch in until it stops, NOT all the way to the floor. You might be pressing to hard which is pushing that slave rod so hard, its not letting the clutch engage and disengage. If thats the case you are WRECKING your new slave. I just went through this because I didnt know. I was pushing it all the way to the floor and it would NOT go into any gear, andif I got it into reverse it would slam the trans. I limped to shop and they showed me how they adjusted my pedal and I have had NO problems shifting period.

I hope I helped you
