Ok so a buddy of mine and i went to pull a part the other day! We found a 93 chevy 3500 turbo diesel. It is labeled gm-3. From what I have read and found, everyone seems to be running the gm-8 and I am seing conflict with it...

But from what I've noticed is the gm-3 has a much smaller turbine housing than a gm-8.....Any info on this turbo would be greatly appreciated!

Btw this thing came off with no shaft play no thrust and no visible damage! as soon as i can bare this cold...I will be inspecting it further while clocking it and such.

Hmmm... What really got me questioning, was the rumors I was finding while trying to search for info on this thing. A lot of people were trash talking it, and saying it was hard to spool for our cars because of how it was setup on the truck itself!

Think those are just uneducated theories?

I would post it up in the main Turbo section of the site. I am sure someone will know more about it there. I honestly never heard of it till this post :p

I have a Gm-8 Im running.

It sucks and pushes air just fine. I havent got to really test the limits of it, because the car is down at the moment. But I have no complaints thus far.

I am assuming the gm-8 is bigger than the gm-3 though right? According to the link i was given, the borg warner gm-3 was a .52 trim. I will assume the gm-8 is bigger than that?

If that's true than this confirms that the gm-3 will work just fine!

Sweet...hopefully it will roll nicely in my buddies talon then! We are building a 91 awd auto and this thing is being a temp turbo on his talon! if it works nicely it comes to me when he gets his s200 setup! i may either sell this thing or keep it we will see.

My 20g spools like a 16 and is effitent to 28psi so I am happy with it because 28psi is more then I can run on race gas..

Well from research I've found that like the 18g...the 20g was given too small of a shaft and too big of a compressor housing...This causes it to pretty much destroy itself from knocking itself off balance..

unlike borg warners..and other diesel turbos..which were given thicker shafts (insert sex joke here)

upon further inspection here are the specs on the induce and exducer and the turbine wheel

compressor
inducer - 53cm
exducer - 76cm

turbine
inducer - 56cm
exducer - 65cm

so that makes it a 50 trim right?

Did you see any info on the gm 8. I have one and havent made up my mind if im going to use it or not. Let me know if were you got the info on the 3, if there is any on the 8.

What are your plans if any for the snail?

well...it was for my buddies tsi...so hes gonna run it on his car until he gets his s200 borg setup for his car....once that happens it will come back to me and will be run on my car set to about 20psi when i have the car running correctly and reliably

i found the info in a thread on dsm talk

only thing i could find out about the gm 8 was alot of people are having trouble spooling it....but honestly i dont think its the turbo...just the car

given the gm 3 is a 52 trim i am willing to bet the gm 8 is a 60 trim easy
