All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Maybe one of your solenoids?

I know my EGR and purge solenooid taps at those rpms....

Just a thought...

definitly the valves or rod. time for some work or a new motor if u wanna put money in to it.

well if its the valvles aka lifters, that wont be alot of work just a matter of swappin the old for some new 3g lifters. and its deff not a rod its a clicking sound. a rod would be a pretty destinct knock. but like i said iv had all the lifters out and i didnt notice any of them being bad. but the cam puts alot more force on them then i can. but thats the only thing under the valve cover i can think of that would make that noise... and you said your egr valve clicks at those rpms, how loud is it and can you hear it from inside the car ?

Do you seriously think we could give you any guidance with a description like that

Does the car whine when the turbo is spooling? Need a little more details if possible. :D

yes i could hear the turbo spool at around 3k.. but all i hear is the schreech when i floor it so i cant really tell if its still spooling it high rpms

ill get a video up on it

Need more details. Could be many different things.
Where does it sound like it comes from?

Check turbo shaftplay, that's quick and easy.

the car drives fine.. has a high idle but all i can describe it is as a screeching noise.. i dont hear it while driving casually, only when i give it alot of gas

i have a 95 talon tsi, and everytime i floor it my car makes a screaming noise kinda like EEEEEEEEEEE :p but anyways my car is all stock. what could be the problem?

now is it a EEEEEE sound or more like a EEEEEEEEK sound cause that could be 2 totaly diffrent things.

that question is like me asking you this
whats wrong with my car everytime i start to move its making a sound like WOOOOOOOOOOOO.

get a video up or something

Ok so I have this damned noise coming from my engine bay, and I don't know what it is. My friend (Who is good with cars) suggested the clutch, but I'm not sure. Here's what it is as best as I can describe it

-Something spinning/scraping
-Happens in neutral but not when the clutch is depressed
-Happens in gear for the first few minutes, then slowly disappears usually without me noticing
-Clutch is NOT slipping, and seems to be driving fine
-Throwout bearing was supposedly replaced (I no longer use that mechanic, as I don't trust him, so he may have lied)

I thought it was a belt but the belt on the side of my engine (I'm sorry I don't know what that is, I'm still learning) is covered and I can't see it. I guess the clutch makes sense but I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars then find out that's not it. I've been down that road and don't like it. Any help would be much appreciated, and I'll see if I can get a video of the sound, but my exhaust might drown it out, especially on a phone. Also, if anyone is in NY (Westchester, Putnam, etc) I'd be glad to pay if someone can come check it out for me. Thanks for any help

I agree, throwout bearing. Ya you can drive it for few miles here and there. When it turns into crunching or happens when clutch is depressed also or locks up, time to pull the tranny and replace it. It will only get worse with time and eventually lock up or disintegrate but usually you can drive short trips for a while - keep an ear on it. Eventually you will have to pull the tranny.

Why would I have to replace the tranny, and not the clutch?
