Hey guys. Well here's the problem. I have. 91tsi awd 5sp, recently bought a parts 91 tsi, swapped out trans and now when I take off, it will smoke the clutch just to take off and I can go almost 70 mph in first gear! parts car had a tiger import sticker on it and trans fluid was fresh and said to be overhauled. Reverse works perfect, clutch dis & engages fine, turbo spools in reverse but I can't get my rpms up high enough to spool in forward. I tried shifting to higher gears while in motion and it actually shifts to a higher ratio!! I'm baffled any ideas would be appreciated.

I have a JDM galant vr4 transmission....they are pretty much the same thing and dont even come close to causing the problem you have

Until you post pic of your trans or the Numbers off the trans, Nobody is gonna be of much help...
and more then likely gonna just continue to Call BS... .

wait...... try to take of in every gear.... start from first... then stop completely then try to take off on second, the 3rd etc. etc... try to see what gear is best for take off..!!! eventually youll find the g spot... if not then i think your stuck with 3rd and 4th... i dont know man... something is totally wrong here...

oh yeah, thats something else to try, disconnect shifter cables, put transmission in neutral, put shifter in neutral, connect shifter cables. also, i can promise you that you aren't in first gear. the best thing to do is shift through the gears and see how many gears you have to the right.

one of two things will happen, you're in 3rd, so you pull back, 4th, you move into the 3rd position and you're in 5th, pull back, and the shifter will stop you because you're trying to go into revers.

or, you're in 5th, in which case, you pull back, the shifter won't move because you're trying to go from 5th to reverse.

do that, and lmk what your results are

I call bs....

Agreed, some information is missing here.
If it was a different transmission - wether it's the 90,91, 92, or JDM - I would think the trans would not work at all.

Not result in an insane gear ratio.

Only thing I could think of is the a malfunction with the shift forks therefore causing it to be stuck in 3rd gear and the OP hasn't yet realized the car is stuck in gear.

Perhaps it was rebuilt with a crazy final drive?

I'm betting he has 3,4 and 5, but no 1-2.
To the OP, just drive the car is 5th gear on the freeway at 65mph and tell us the RPM at that speed.

I don't see how It would be a different final ratio
without the proper T-case and rear end... It wouldn't go down the road at all ...

the sticker has been wiped clean off the trans, any other place to pull a code off this thing...

Your linkage is most likely not adjusted correctly or that trans is not for a dsm. Sounds like your shifter in the car is in the 1st gear position but the trans is actually in 3rd or 5th gear.

There isn't a tranny out there that has that crazy of a gear ratio, for DSM's, unless its custom. Same goes for the final drive, which is in the... I'll let you figure that out. Why is your clutch slipping? You say you can't build boost, then there's your reason, due to lowload, therefore no boost. Check your clutch assembly, shift linkag, AND your pedal assembly. Did you even bleed it right? Something ISN'T put in there right.

Also check your intermediate shaft bracket bolts, if those break off you'll basically be freewheeling unless you have a welded center diff and your speedo will shoot up with your rpms.

Its 99% chance that its a shift linkage problem..the only other thing i could think of was someone had the tranny apart and put a 4th gear and 5th gear in place of a 1st and 2nd...LOL...i dont even know if that would work..but ya..:) GOOD LUCK!
