Everytime I tried putting in 4th gear it just made a horrible grinding sound. Took it to the mechanic, it need a new clutch, apparently I was running with the original clutch since teh car was built :ohdamn: After that it ran way soother but it still grinds on 4th gear.

Mechanic told me I have to buy a syncro kit for 350$ WTF do I actually need to buy that? Or do I just buy the synchro for 4th gear, and where do I buy it?

Your synchro is bad/going bad. If you are going to have one replaced, you might as well replace them all while your in there, no point in having to tear it all apart when another one starts going bad.

Yeah you are going to want to do a full rebuild, but your synchros should be alot cheaper then $350. Look around because i've found a full set for around $150.

Also if you're looking for a quick fix till you can get the money for synchros try putting in some penzoil synchro mess (it's in a yellow bottle). They sell it at autozone and it helps TREMENDIOUSLY with grinding. I had a bad grind into second and after I did a fluid swap it felt like a brand new transmission. Hope this helps.

yea fluid would be a quick fix and it wouldn't pay to only do one syncro if its already apart mine as well do them all. and depending on how inclined you are you might be able to do it yourself i have with just a diagram to look at wasant that bad given i had the tools and time.

You can buy fourth gear synchro alone or you can buy the full set of synchros. Synchros are cheap enough and are probably the biggest "wear and tear" parts on a transmission. Your best bet would be to purchase the full set of synchros and replace all of them while you have the transmission apart.

Like others have said, you can definitely find synchros for cheaper than $350, I agree that's pretty steep. TRE sells synchros for our cars along with other parts for our transmissions:
GENUINE MITSUBISHI TRANSMISSION PARTS

Be aware that most of the money will go into labor though, so even if you get a full set of synchros for around $150 you might still be looking at a total bill of around $400 after parts and labor. Of course the best option would be to do the work yourself if at all possible.

If you're not comfortable doing the work yourself I would suggest getting some labor quotes beforehand so you know exactly what you're getting into and how much you're looking at. Depending on the cost you might want to consider just biting the bullet and buying a rebuilt transmission. That way everything is new and you know what you're getting will last for years to come. For all you know, you can open up the bellhousing and find that other parts inside the transmission are damaged and need to be replaced as well.

Dogbox had a pretty good sale going on a couple of weeks ago:

Built Trans Starting at $575
If you have the money I would go with that deal. If you know how to rebuild a trans then I would save up and just buy the synchros.

However, if you don't know how I would look into buying that doxbox trans because that's a great deal and you could make some money back by selling your old trans and telling them that the 4th gear has a grind. As long as the transmission hasn't locked up its still possible to rebuild and people will buy them.

Get your trans done at shepard's; go to sheptrans.com. I have a stage 3, it is amazing, a little pricey, but well worth it.

Thanks for the quick response guys.
Believe me, if I had the time I would do the job myself since I love doing all that stuff and learning about it, but unfortunately I don't. :(

The mechanic is a friend of my dad's so the labor isn't that steep, he showed us a picture (which i can't find now) of all the synchros connected to a shaft and the shaft + synchros was 350$ does that shaft make such a difference?

After what you guys posted I think I'll take the option of doing the synchro fix, it's the best I can do with the money I have, and I need the car ASAP.
