So I just finished my engine rebuild and put it into my 90 laser RS. I was letting it run for a little while just to make sure everything was good, and the engine is running fine, but after about 20- 30 min of running it cut off. It would heat up then cool down then heat up and cool down, but there was more heating up than cooling down ( think three steps forward and only two back). It balanced for a little while right above the top line before it hit the red, even dipping below that line but in the end it cut off. I looked and only one fan, on the passengers side, was working, hopefully this is the problem so how do i go about fixing this fan? and if this is not the problem what should I do to make it not over heat?

for one make sure that you and enough water.. no pun intended and you only need the passenger fan the other fan is a ac fan dont rely on the stock temp gauge do you have a data logger to see the real temp? make sure that your water pump is working correctly like if there is pressure in the radiator top and bottom hoses and make sure that your thermostat is working correctly some stick if they have not been used for a while take it out and test it boil some water and drop it in and see if it slowly opens up or pops and ive heard of some people putting them in backwards

and ive heard of some people putting them in backwards

For some reason thats very common I've seen quite a few friends to that hah. You just built the motor, did you replace the water pump, thermostat, all gaskets including head gasket? Your temp gauge should be dead center NEVER in the red. Did you have the head or block machined at all?

Never assume things are right, did you do a compression test, just in case, look for leaks mine overheated hg blown, something went wrong easy fix when i can fix the problem myself.

well the water pump is working, I am getting fluid running in the radiator tubes, and im sure there is enough coolant/ water, i did replace all of that stuff so it shouldnt be any of that. and what can I do to fix it if it is this sticky thermostat?
