I recently just purchased a 1997 GSX to be my summer car. It's nice so far, although I've only driven it a mile from my house to my super secret storage facility (got there without a problem!). Plans are to fix it up a bit over the winter before the snow melts, then get it on the road and go from there.

There are currently a few issues such as:
-has ebay turbo
-some oil line to turbo leaks
-idles a littler on the lean side (15.0-15.5)
-belts squeal upon start up
-exhaust blows white smoke at idle (not completely sure on this one...my guess is it's burning oil?)

I will essentially return the mechanical aspects back to stock, i.e. T25, stock injectors, etc. for reliablity's sake. Also, I'll upgrade in the future and I'd like some reference point to compare to...stock would be ideal.

All in all, this is my first DSM, I've only own Hondas and Nissans. Just checking in and hoping to get a few pointers here and there. I'm also stoked to be a part of the forum now that I finally got the car! I was lurking for a few weeks.

Any input on the white smoke would be cool. It's a white-gray color, doesn't smell sweet or anything.

Any other issues I should look for? I've taken note of quite a few, mostly small ones.

And here are some pics of the car...albeit shitty, but pictures nonetheless!

that's usually accompanied with the smell of burning anti-freeze?...it smells more like fuel. LOL i hope it's not burning coolant...

and no, it was posted on another forum but it could've be cross posted on here

Man, Im jealous. Ive been searching for a GSX forever now. Get that Ebay turbo off there though.

That isn't really lean for idle.

Thanks for the info. i know ideally it's 14.7, the stoichiometric ratio. I figured it's a bit lean, fluctuating b/w 15.0-15.5. I'm also wondering if my wideband isn't calibrated correctly? car has been sitting for about a year before i picked it up. is it possible for it to need a recalibration after sitting?

def. picking up a different one tonight :thumb:

Looks pretty clean, those red gauges are blinding though :p

they suck. previous owner put cluster on there.

looks like you picked up the gsx off of rochesterdsm.com,, nice 4g rims, thats where i know ive seen that car before.

the white smoke could be the fact that its 15 degrees out and you drove it for a mile to the storage facility. the exhaust never got hot enough and the combustion process turns your fuel into h20 ( with the cat and all ) so personally if your coolant levels are not decreasing then i wouldnt worry about it.

yes that idol is on the lean side 14.7 is what your looking for. I personally think once you return her back to stock with all your gagues and all im sure youll see the numbers your looking for and all those little problems will disappear.

you said theres bigger injectors in there? what did the previous guy tune with? SAFC? or did he flash the ecu? if he flashed it your going to have to look for another stock2g ecu.

I agree with your ideas, get that car back to stock then get a wish list together and enjoy the car, I live in Rochester so if you need any help or ideas theres a few of us on here and rochesterdsm is a good source as well

enjoy boosting

possibly, never checked out the sight. car came from albany and the guy who posted the thread put it up for his friend. thanks, i like the wheels a lot.

i'm not sure how long it takes these cars to warm up with the turbo and all. i had it idling for a bit before driving it, and i'm not sure if it was smoking while i was driving or not. there's also a strong smell of either fuel or oil burning. i understand the combustion process, but can't see that the smell would be very strong even if the exhaust wasn't completely warmed. it was ball-freezing cold that night though!

yeah, I'm hoping everything will run smoothly once returned to stock.

no, no. 880's came with the car, stocks are on there now. I honestly don't know about any tuning that was done to the car previously. My guess is with dsmlink as the car came with a dsmlink v2. Also guessing that the stock ecu is in the car now, but I haven't torn into the thing yet. I've only poked my head around.

thanks! I'll definitely head over there, and give you a pm if I ever have any questions. mmm boost :sneaky:

White smoke caused by turbo seal? I'm just throwing the idea out there seeing it is from ebay, but with that aside, I like the car and sounds like you have a bomb proof plan (but it is a dsm dont forget).

My white smoke was caused by a bad turbo seal. I repaired the turbo and was told by my friend following me that he saw white smoke when I was getting on it, it turned out to be a leaking head gasket at higher boost levels. The head was lifting due to age, factory head bolts and gasket. Hope this helps!

if u got dsm link and you are gonna put a stock turbo on, you might as well throw a e316g on it. you can get a tune with that turbo that way u don't have to swap it again once you realize how lame that t-25 is gonna be LOL.

Looks like you got a nice car with a few bonuses. External wastegate setup already, a different bov. I'll vote too if you're not losing coolant, then it's just the cold causing the smoke.

Don't bother with a T25.

Get at least a 14b, it's still quite an upgrade over a t25 and just as cheap.

The black looks good! yeah i'm not a huge fan of this interior color either but that's not a high priority right now.

As for the T25...I just bought one an hour ago...LOL wish I read this earlier, would've looked for a 14b!! gosh darn it all

Well if you're going to skip over the T25 and get a 16g you might as well go ahead and get a 16g. LOL

i always though lean at idle was ok, almost every car i know does it since your not under a load, i idle at 15.5-16.0:1 :coy: just once you get past 17:1 you get lean misfire
