Hey guys, I currently have an 04 350Z with a twin turbo...I'm potentially interested in purchasing a 2G GSX as a daily driver car to replace my bland Camry. I tried to do as much reading as I could prior to posting...looks like the main issue is the crankwalking.

Are there are any other common issues I should be looking for? Anything relevant to a certain year? I've read that the 98-99 GSX's, the crankwalk was resolved, but the I've also read that it is an issue all of the 2g's. Not sure what to believe? I've also read that the 97 was the highest percentage of problems, is that correct?

Any advice you guys can provide would be much appreciated.

I've owned two '97's, neither walked. In buying one, i wouldn't worry too much about crankwalk, it's not as common as it appears to be. Just be weary of when the 60k maintenance was done(timing belt and waterpump). Make sure the recalls were done. Other then that, it is like buying a normal car, you should know what to look for. I also forgot to pull the intake tube and check the shaft play on the turbo, and see if it smokes on startup or take-off. And if it is that important to you, make sure the door handles work, they tend to break alot. :D

Yea just make sure and check if it shifts pretty good and all because since it's AWD. Somebody could have had a little too much fun with launches it can do. Make sure the proper maintenance was done to it and check the crankplay and make sure it is in spec. If your so worried about crankwalk most people get a 6 bolt and shove it in there but some trust the 7 bolt enough to not worry too much. Try and get a late one if you can. They have the least mileage on them and are not as old.

A 2G Talon TSi AWD.

The main issue is finding one that hasn't been beaten to within an inch of its life. Put crankwalking out of your consciousness. It's a trivial concern with an occurence rate on the order of 5%. Be more concerned with timing belt age.

modded or not (boost + retards = epic fail)
if it has been maintained. biggest thing ive learned from these cars is maintained first mods later.
how he or she has driven the car. possibly a carfax on the vehicle.
being a 97 how many miles it has. crank walk will happen around the 100k mark, but this is tied into how its been driven and maintenance.

if it has 160k ide ask to see how it has been driven (although my 92 has 158k and the guy drove like shit but it runs like a champ!) if its been maintained and taken care of sounds like you have a good car! enjoy it man they are a blast!

Your best bet is to go check it out and drive it. Ask about routine maintenance, especially the water pump and timing belt. The timing belt needs to be changed every 60k otherwise you're just playing with fire.

take it home man! sounds solid! first thing when you get it home personally out of saftey for myself replace belts (timing included), gaskets (headgasket as well), oil, radiator fluid, tranny. then have a great time man! they are amazing cars!!

Please stop talking. You're newbie status means just that.

Besides the fact that it is street racing and not allowed on these forums, there is no real truth in that statement, sure maybe completely identical builds one on a GST and one on a GSX will give the GST a slight advantage, but it loses it's advantage with traction disadvantages.
