I have a 98 GSX i have been working on for over a year now. Its beed a great car.

I found a 97 Talon awd in the middle of nowhere. The guy told me the timing belt snapped. I thought oh not to bad of a fix. Bought it for $600. Pulled the head off. Bent valves everywhere. Dented pistons:banghead:

I want to fix it but I dont have alot of money. I got in a bigger hole than I thought and now I cant get out.

Should I part it out or fix it?

Depends on how much money u want to spend. If u do the work yourself maybe a couple grand. Or part it out but you will have time and effort. Or just try to get your money back out of it. I would put it on Craigslist as a parts car. Maybe trade for upgrades for your other car.

I think it could be a great doner car for a awd convertion. The problem is that its automatic. I think someone out there would want it. I dont want to spend more than 1000. I prefer using the money to upgrade my GSX.

Thats why I want to fix it cause these car are rare and not that cheap. My best bet is wait for taxes and spend it on getting it fixed. Anybody think I might need rods too? The car has 95,000 miles. For sure going to replace all the bearings.

partsdinosaur.com is a good place for oem parts, prices are good too.

I recommend take some parts off this car for your other if it needs anything.

Either fix her up slowly one part at a time, then sell it when its fixed or sell it as is way she sits after things you took off?

IMO you should just buy a used running 6/7 bolt and just drop it in. All of this talk of replacing OEM valves and pistons for a junk car is kind of uneconomical. Unless you're making a quality street car, there is nothing wrong with running a used engine.

Yeah you should totally stay with it and build it up slowly. Just as mentioned above it's alot easier having to buty a used engine and dropping it in. You can find engines on craigslist for a good price. The only thing is you never really know the background on the used engine. Either way you got a hell of a deal. Fix it :thumb:

Here is another path.

Go to the local pick apart and pull a 4g64 2.4L motor out of a Galant, there around $200 around here.

Most all parts from your 4g63 will bolt up. Put on your rebuilt 2g head and presto you will have an instant stroker motor.

And for the nay sayers regarding the 4g64, ther is a guy out there with a 3g running a stock inernals 4g64 and a big turbo and all the bolt-on's turning a 12.5 sec. quarter mile on 10lbs boost.

Oh and they tend not to crankwalk:D

Just a thought for an economical upgrade.

Save a little money and get a low mile jdm motor. Even if you did it and decided you needed the money you could sell the car running for a nice little profit.

After thinking about all the great advice I have decide not to part it out. I think I will get parts and rebuild the motor myself. Take my time and do it right. I already got a head for cheap so I just need to take it apart and find out if the rods are ok.

Yeah, I found a used engine that a guy had taken out of his DSM to replace it with a 2.4 - sold it to me for $800 with new timing parts/water pump. Rented a U-Haul pickup and drove about 3 hrs to get it. Finding a used engine is just the easier path.. I would've preferred to fix it just to have done it myself, but it overheated bad so I decided to replace.

So I decided to spend some money. I got some evo 8 pistons off of Fightclub66. Ordered some new piston rings and rod bearings. Now I just hope it stops rainning so I can tear the motor open and drop in the new pistons.

600$ Plus a 500-1000$ junkyard motor. You could easily make some money if you decide to sell it. If you dont want to go that rought, Even 9 pistons/rods. You can usually get them used for under 200$ of the evo forums. New timing set (265$ @ stm IIRC). Fel-pro gasket set (~250$) new mains and rod bearings ~100$ (Sealed Power) ARP Headstuds (89$ or wait for a partout). Your sitting @ 904$ W/o machine work or a new head. You don't have to build the head. A set of ENGNBLDR valves and a valve job and you could probably have basically a brand new motor for less than 1200$. 1200+600 = 1800, clean it really really well while the engine is out so that that engine bay is clean. Detail it. Flip it for 2500-3000$.

Part out and make a budget for you next project. It best to get out of debt! I have been and its great! (mortgage doesn't count)

Listen to this guy. A little labour and hard work you could easily make a sweet $1000 cash in your pocket for your gsx. You will also be giving the gift of a lovely dsm. Although if it's a rust bucket and the body isn't straight at all....... part it out, you dont want those headaches.

no. the timing belt going out should not harm the connecting rods at all. just the valves and, if you're unlucky, the pistons.

presuming the body is in good shape and the car is stock, my advice would be to take the head to a machine shop, have them tank it, deck it, and replace the valves. drop the oil pan, disconnect the connecting rods, and pop the pistons out through the top of the block. replace the pistons with stock sized hypereutectic pistons. replace the piston rings. hone the cylinders. replace the gaskets and reinstall everything.

then, once it's running again, sell it. you're looking at $150 in a full gasket set, $100-150 for a timing belt kit, $119 for replacement hypereutectic pistons and rings, and about $300 to get the head fixed/reconditioned. add that to the $600 price of the car and you've got ~$1500 into a car you can then sell for $3000. that's $1500 you can use to fix up your eclipse. do you really think you're going to make more parting it out? and if so, do you think it's going to be less work?

if he's just going to flip it, he doesn't need to spend that much. a lot of those parts are really nice to have, but not necessary if the car is stock/being sold as a stock daily driver...
