i just replaced my timing belt from napa a week ago. today the dam thing snapped and F#$%#@ up my engine. is there any way they are at fault? a new belt shouldnt of snapped

help me out

Who did the timing belt job and was it set at the proper tension? Was the tensioner and bearings replaced? I would try to contact them.

if a certified garage did the job you can go back to them but if you did the job you are pretty much screwed napa will not take any action they just sold the part they dont have control what you do with it after that. if you did the job just man up and admit you messed up and fix it .

They will give you a new belt LOL thats it.. You can probably get some cash out of the shop that did it though!

probably just some new valves at worst a new head and timing belt

First off, what manufacturer was the belt from? I know you said you got it from napa, but I'm not sure if napa actually makes a timing belt for our cars. If it was an ITM or something of that nature, do yourself a favor and don't buy that crap again. OE is the best way to go with for a lot of applications, i.e. timing belts/components, etc, etc. A lot of guys go with kevlar belts such as Gates, HKS, etc. I bought an engine from Karking last year (not reading up on them before doing so) and bought a 6bolt swap with 2g head. Well, the engine looked immaculate, pulled the head, good surface and decking on the block. Pulled the oil pan and checked main/rod bearings, still looking good. But it had an ITM timing belt. I looked closely and you could actually see the outside strip of the belt seperating from the strip that has the teeth if you stuck your fingernail in between them. Crap parts result in craploads of money spent fixing the issue that could have been dealt with before hand. So that's why I'm addressing it now with an OE timing belt. Sorry for the long post, just giving you something to relate to from my point of view.

Someone else can chime in but you're more than likely going to end up pulling the head and checking for bent valves, and nicked pistons. Before you do that be sure to do a leakdown/compression test (I forget which) just to see ahead of time what you'll be dealing with. Other than, good luck, keep the thread going with updates so we can give you a hand. Good day, sir!

there was a ton of oil coming out though.. idk if thats from the head or not..

There was oil coming out of where exactly? Be a little more specific when asking for help, boss.

One of the belts napa sells is a continental, with the mitsu part number printed on it. I have used those up to 8500rpm's without issue. Any belt will fail if installed improperly, or soaked with oil.

sounds like you tightened it way to much and it jumped or retarded timing. honestly im going to say new motor. there is no way you snapped a belt and did not slam a few valves threw a piston or two. if so your damn lucky!!!!!!!!!! next time to do the belt take it to some one that knows what there doing. i know that sounds bad but most places iv gone to in my past years let me watch so i get an idea till i found a shop that let me help. if that makes sense. but i would have to say your going to need a rebuild or new motor...............

Gates belt+correct tension+you=success

But any belt can fail if improperly installed....j/k Donnie.

But seriously, it's true. I just don't trust a lot of brands out there. It could have been too tight, or it could have been a shyt part. I've heard of Continentals holding up, it's actually the only belt I'd CONSIDER buying if I couldn't get my hands on an OE one on short notice. The closest Mitsu dealership is an hour east of here, and I'm in the Army so I can't just take off and go there when I feel the need to.
