okay i have always wanted to do this because of the fact that Ive always wanted a engine bay i could work around. something durable, easy to clean/touch up, and looks half way decent. i personally think its "unique" i have never seen this done before in any other engine bay and i thought i would give it a try while i have the motor out of the car. i personally think it turned out pretty good but i would like to hear other tuner member opinion on it.

pics start after a soap down and pressure wash. ugh, she was ugly...

pics start after a good sanding, wipe down with duplicolor wax/grease remover, and 3 coats of rhino lining material. sorry for no step by step pics. i wasnt expecting to do this.

last impressions:

i really like this so far. i have less than 50 bucks in the entire project, and picked everything at the parts store. i literally rolled this lining on with a roller and where ever the engine hit while installing it i touched up with a small paint brush:thumb:. you cant even tell there was a scratch there since it self levels. i hope it holds up to the heat. i think it will since truck beds get hot from the sun baking down on them all day. only time will tell i guess :)

lmk what you guys think.

dont get me wrong now. the car looks good at the angles i took the pics. i really hate to say my cars a bucket but its definetly not the nicest 2g. im working with a budget and it definetly helps clean things up.

thanks man :)

Damn. I did mine like this a little while ago, and never got around to posting pics. I did the whole bay, firewall and all.

Maybe Ill post pics next time I head over to my storage unit and remember to take some.

dibs on being the first HAHA. im going to finish up the front next time i pull my radiator. i was really pressing to see if the motor i had gotten was any good.

I went threw a process like that a few months ago LOL. I used spray on line-x bedliner on my wheel wells after stripping them to metal and priming them. I sanded my engine bay with 400 grit paper, shot some self etching primer, rattle caned 3 layers of auto body paint, then I put 3 layers of auto body clear. Total time of mine from start to finish was 1.5 days (most was drying time). The finish in mine was really hard to chip off. When I put my engine in I lay fender liners in the bay to prevent scratching and damage, but even tools and brackets clanging against the paint didn't damage it but for light scratches that couldn't bee seen at all.

That roll on bedliner will peel off easy. You should of sanded every thing and used some paint prep and cleaner because some areas dont stick because of oil, wax, gunk. I think it turned out ok for you thow. Nice job!

HERES HOW MINE TURNED OUT FOR ME.

^That looks great! I'll be doing the same with my wheel wells and color matching the undercarriage.

Heh, now you literally have a bomb proof engine bay.

I forget what show it was where they detonated a bomb in the bed of a truck that was rhino lined and it destroyed all of the truck that wasn't lined but did almost nothing to the bed LOL.

*edit* Found it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W7uFiPVF5I

Thank-you for the compliment. My undercarrage was completely sealed off and line-x'ed as well.

When I say sealed off I meen that I took all the holes in the frame rails and body and had them welded shut with steel and rubber body plugs. I made a tube from an old spray paint sprayer and attached it to a hose and put the cone sprayer on the end. I fed it into the holes and primed it then painted it with dupilcolor rim paint to prevent future rust.

I got the idea from eastwood supply LOL. I used my fiber optic scope and inspected every inch of the insides of the rails and in the body to find any rust and there was none so I stopped it from ever happening :hellyeah:. Most people just slap arubber plug in the holes of the car. I use AMAZING GOOP on all the rubber plugs to insure it wont pop out, leak, or rust.

The line-x bedliner looks thin but its about 1/8" thick it just brings out the detailes with how well it holds and formes to the surface its bonded to. I know it's extremely strong as well we tested it in the best way possible while having lots of fun. We took a lawn-boy old school green push mower and line-x'ed the under side of the deck with 1/8" like my DSM and ran it threw big piles of gravel till one full tank of gas ran out. There was scratches but nothing deep or threw to the metal OMG. NOW THTS SOME STRONG STUFF :rocks::hellyeah::thumb:.

Quentin, Did you take your car to a Line-X shop? It's not a DIY product is it? I had planned on using U-Pol Raptor liner as I've seen a ton of good reviews.

Mine is black but it's the same 2 part 50/50 bonding liner.

I did it at home yes. I know tommy at te line-x shop that I can litterall see right now down the street. I got all the supplies from him and rented the spray gun from them. I had to use ready heaters in the garage when it was 103* ferinhite outside to get the temp of the garage up to abut 120* because I wanted it to dry fast. I coated it and turned the heater on, shut the door and 1 hour later I used the remote garage door opener and went in turnd the heater off and inspected the work. We didnt have blower fans to cool the garage off but man were all the tools in the garage roasting A$$ hot LOL. (no cans, oil, gas, or flamable stuff was let in the garage). You don't have to bake it, just do it on a warm day and let it sit a bit longer than I had to.

To the OP. Be careful because bedliner is like a plastic and heat will catch it on fire. Puttng out a plastic fire is like putting out a grease fire. It's not gonna be fun and easy. I would take and coat it with some high heat enamel that is black. It's cheap and even walmart carries it.

You should Rhino line your valve cover too

thanks for the compliments guys. the whole project took less than 1 day start to finish. i think it like 20 dollars a can for the roll on beliner stuff at oriley auto parts and 10 dollars for the roll on kit. for all the parts you can reach you just dab with a paint brush. it took like seriously like 6 hours start to finish...

ill get some better pics in a little bit....

OP, This is what my 1990 GS-t looked like in the start. Your engine bay will stay cleaner alot more now with the black :). My setup was mostly stock appearing and dark colors. Yours having that extra flashy aftermarket parts will pull it off right.

This is what mine looked like when it was all back together and dusty like no other from beeing in a garage with 2 cars beeing sanded for primer and paint.

I'm not trying to steal your light on the thread. I'm just shooting out some ideas and suggestions by experiance. Sorry if it kinda seemed like that's what I was doing.

I personally think it was a poor solution to the problem. It add's weight to the front of the car (worst spot to do so) I don't think it looks good, thats subjective though. And I think it has the potential to be a fire hazard.

To each his own though you and others seem to like it, thats what counts. Since you likely have the container there product came in, does it say what the temp range for the coating is?

my car is FWD so weight in the front would be a good thing. i cant see it adding more than 3-5lbs to the front. im also pretty sure its not a fire hazard either. its black and as to withstand the florida sun beating down on it for 10 to 12 hours a day.

on a side note tho its saying its very flamable. its not saying if its flamable while wet in the can or dry tho. i broke some pieces off of the container and tried to light them on fire with a lighter. it did set on fire but thats under open flame. it didnt do anything when the flame was about a inch away and that was too hot for me to keep my hand in the area for any amount of time.

so i dunno. i guess we will find out...

more pics of it almost finished.

good job....i would have probably sprayed white over the liner just so i could easily spot leaks.

My concern about the fire hazard wasn't so much it bursting into flames, but if there was ever a engine bay fire, it might act as a high energy fuel, like tar etc. It is not easy to light, but once it starts burning holy shit does it put out some serious heat.

Like I said to each there own, if you like it, thats what counts. I was just attempting to point out a possibly fire hazard / safety concern you may not have thought of, thats all.

every1 will criticize what every1 does, some will like it and others wont, but my reaction to what they say is its what i drive and its what i wanted to do,if you like how it turned out than thats all that matters. Good job
