Hello guys!

These days I've run into a small cooling issue. At normal cruising speeds it runs fine, temp gauge runs in the middle, oscillating a tiny bit but nothing that's not normal. However, I've noticed that when I go "all out" with it, changing gears at 7000 rpm (just before the redline), by the time I hit third gear the temperature starts to go up. Of course, that doesn't mean I can't drive it, but I wanted to go to a trackday event in december, so I need to fix that.

I've checked everything in the cooling system and everything seems normal. Is there something more "stealthy" that I might have missed or something? Also, here in Brazil the law forced us to use license plates on the front of the car, and mine's placed right in front of the radiator (2Gb bumper), though that has never been an issue. I can take it off in the trackday, but I wanted to be on the safe side. Could changing the fluid fix that? I change it (as well as all the other fluids) at the end of every year, and I haven't changed them yet.

Thanks guys!

well unfortunately alot of guys run into this same problem when they start upgrading their car. Trying to get more flowing air to the radiator helps and having good fans as well. With the turbo and exhaust mani so close to radiator causes cooling issues. putting new coolant in could help but you may need to think about investing in an aluminum radiator, runs around 250 dollars and is well worth it.

The car is mostly stock (only a cone filter), so that's what's making me think. I'll try relocating the license plate and changing the fluid for now, and see if it works. Perhaps it's always happened and I never noticed... I was planning on upgrading to an Evo III 16G so if I was thinking about buying the cooling stuff before, now it's certainly on the list.

Also, some brands are the best for radiators and fans? Is Mishimoto good? What size fan do I need, and can I go bigger? Are those shrouds worth it?

Thanks for the info.

What temp thermostat are you running? Are the electric fans coming on?

Electric fan are coming on normally and I am running no thermostat. Shouldn't that make it run colder?

Agreed, put your thermostat back in. Stick with OEM or 10* hotter if you need to. Also look into doing the quick wire mod for having your fans come on together, when they do activate. Lastly, try switching to a higher water mix in your coolant and replace your coolant cap. I'd run an 80/20 mix of coolant, since you won't be experiencing any freezing temperatures.

I took it off because it wasn't working properly anymore, and parts aren't easy to find here in Brazil (and they take quite a while to come). When I last traveled to the US I couldn't find an OEM one so I ended up getting an aftermarket one that was as unreliable as the broken stock one. So I took it off for now. You guys think that it's really what's causing it?

Also, I thought the coolant worked for both heat and cold, and putting more water would make it worse. It's pretty hot in here, especially now, that's summer.

coolant = antifreeze. Water has a better heat dissapating coefficient (I forget what the scientific term is), so running more water will benefit you. If you need a thermostat, just order one to my house and I will ship it to you via USPS for a cheaper cost. I do this for a friend of mine in the Czech Republic and don't have a problem helping you out. PM Me.

definetly need thermostat. without the thermostat the water is continously cycling through and doesnt sit in radiator long enough to cool down before its cycled back through. Also plus one on 80/20 mix water/coolant.
