How did you route your gauge wires to the engine bay?

How did you route your wires to the engine bay? Post up how you got your gauge wires and/or amp power wire routed to the engine bay please.....need some ideas for my gauges. Thanks
 
You cut a small incision in the rubber boot at the firewall thats around your steering wheel column using a razor. It can be a pain to get a wire through there so I've found that if you bend a coat hanger and tie the end of the wire to the hanger and shove it through your incision in the boot things go a lot faster.
Just be sure to zip-tie the loose wires up and out of the way of your pedals after the install, you don't want to shift and accidently rip out all your wiring because you got lazy doing the install.

This is exactly how i've had mine since 2004 and no problems yet.
 
Another option is going through on the passenger side under the dash where the wiring harness goes through the firewall.
 
Drill a hole in your firewall under your battery, put a rubber grommet in and run wires through that way. A little more work. But it's worth it in the end.

You can also drill a hole in your shifter cable boot at the firewall. This makes for a very clean install since all the wires end up right behind your center console.

The steering boot is kinda ghetto. It might work just fine but it looks like shit and you still have to find a way around your gas pedal and other stuff.
 
I drilled a hole right next to the clutch master cylinder and routed up and around that way under the dash to the a-pillar. with a grommet and cleanly cut zip ties routed with existing bundles, it's clean.. for my amp I went ghetto and poked a hole in the wiring harness boot on the passenger side... but you can't see it anyway so I don't really care, LOL.

I did the same thing for my gauge wiring.
And I use a hole behind the glovebox for everything else.

The steering boot is kinda ghetto. It might work just fine but it looks like shit and you still have to find a way around your gas pedal and other stuff.
It's only ghetto looking if you can see it. ;)

You must be vertically challenged if you can see under your steering wheel console just getting in your car... :D Just kidding. If you do it right and tuck everything up in your dash using zip-ties so its not HANGING it should be fine, there are cleaner ways of tunning wires but its FUNCTION>FORM in my DSM.

im guessing your asking about a 1g like in your pic? If so its easier for us then these 2g guys who have to cut stuff.
I just popped out the rubber seal where the Speedo cable goes through and ran everything from my amp wire to my wideband and boost gauge lines.
 
mine are also run in the steering colum boot, and then once in the engine bay i run them under or next to my stock harness or lines to hide them
 
So if you dont see it then it isn't ghetto...:hmm: Just drill a hole and use a grommet, no coathanger needed :D
What's the difference between running wires through a hole in the firewall, or through a slit in an existing grommet/seal? A slit in the steering boot is actually a perfect solution. No need for extra parts to prevents rubbing wear on hoses and wiring. And it's much easier to do that try to squeeze a drill into the crowded engine or underneath a complete dash. It may not be fancy looking (if it were even visible anyway), but I'd hardly consider it ghetto.
 
If Paul volk does it, I'll do it for sure.... Even if he went super ghetto and routed them out the door, underneath the top of the fender and snaked under the hood all over. Lol jk .... They are going in the steering boot :thumb::hellyeah:
 
Whichever way you choose to do it, make sure that theres some type of grommet between the wire and the hole. You'll rub through the wire's insulation real quick if theres no grommet.

Best way to do it. Works on every car, but like he said it's kid of a pain to run the wires.

What if (in the unlikely event) you ever needed to replace your steering column? You'd have to unwire all the stuff you've got going through it in order to take it out. LOL
 
Very true. In the highly unlikely event that I would ever need to change out the steering column, I would first have to spend 3.6 minutes unplugging a wiring harness and unscrewing a couple hoses to pull them through the boot. ;)

What if you ever needed to replace the firewall? OMG :p
 
I guess in a sense your making theft of your vehicle harder since when they have to replace the column after busting yours they'll be bitching about the wires running through it.
