Just picked up a 1gb Eclipse GSX, first auto DSM I've had, and problem with OD...

So I'm not new to DSM, but new to the forums. I figured, hell, I read this forum all the time, may as well join in.

I've been toying with Honda for a brief stint after getting rid of my last DSM (91 Talon TSi), and finally got rid of my last Honda, just an EX Coupe I got off a guy who needed a better ride, fixed up (he blew the timing belt off, I picked up the pieces by... Well, replacing the belt. It was luck, nothing bent) and traded to another guy for this 1gb GSX.

It's stock, except for front/rear strutbar and I do believe the wheels are from a 2g Eclipse... Corect me if I'm wrong, but I always thought these were 2g wheels. Something of 143k~ on the drivetrain and body.

It had a blown head gasket. 4G63T isn't the easiest motor to do a head gasket on, but it's my second time doing one (Talon had two chipped valves so I was no stranger to head job) so it was pretty cake. I fire it up, go to cruise down the road, and the thing gets up to speed, shift through some gears, and starts revving a bit (I'm not into it, breaking in the new gasket so I was about quarter throttle).

I turn overdrive off and this never happens again. Overdrive is out -__- Is there any chance it's some sort of electronic piece? I'm new to automatics in DSMs, my Colt's auto is a 3-Speed, non-electronic, so it's not very similar in design, and really the only Mitsu auto I've had, besides my parts car (A late 89 Laser GS N/T with the same tranny as the GSX but FWD) so I'm lost.

Anyone know anything about the way the overdrive electronics work?

Could it be a simple fix or am I looking at a new tranny to regain overdrive?

By the way, lots of nice rides on here. I'd post pics of my old Talon but it's long gone, was the first and only nice DSM I had. I plan to clean up this GSX a bit but this is day 2, so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks in advance for the help. : )

I'd double check all the electrical connections to the trans... Then if that doesn't restore OD, I'd start by pulling the TCU codes (free). If nothing turns up there, then start looking into the end clutch pack. This is a known weak points with the 1g AT's. Alto & IPT both make end clutch rebuild kits that aren't going to break the bank... Here's some info:

Autos have some issues reported with the overdrive going bad. Mine did, and I am getting an IPT fully built transmission as we speak.

Someone else can correct me, bu taking off the od only gives the car three gears, which can overheat the tranny, but not sure. But yeah the car would rev, not want to go into gear, or be slow to accelerate like a manual in fifth, then pop into gear. I am making more power and hope to keep it running, so I got the strengthened IPT and torque converter.

Alright, thanks guys. I've got to pull the IC piping out and poke around that corner of the car for a mysterious water leak, so when I'm in that general area I'm check the plugs on the tranny and whatnot.

Another thing I have to change on this car... The front struts. Guy who had it before me heated the springs in it until they compressed, there is no give in the front end anymore. Luckily I have a set of stock struts that are barely used on my Laser parts car.

Trying to get this thing together for winter and then reliable for a trip to Canada. I'm glad I picked it up, it was well worth the car I traded for it.

I'll let you guys know what I find out in the morning.

EDIT:

An electronic overdirve going out will just cause you to run in three gears, overheating the tranny doesn't seem like it'd be a problem. Or at least... It hasn't been on any other car I've seen with the OD out.

EDIT: End clutches are bad. Everything plugged in and no problem codes. I'll replace them come spring time, this is just my winter around-town car.

Thanks again for the help.
