I just wanted to know if it is possible to have 3 broken manifold studs (all on the bottom row) and not have any exhaust leaks. I don't hear any visible leaks. I am just curious before I start killing myself!

Thanks

i've got 2 broken manifold studs that i am going to have removed because if they're not tightened down (with the nut on the stud) you will have exhaust leaks, even if they're small they'll still be there.

It's possible, but I'd suggest getting all the bolts in there like it should be. If you really don't want to remove them, do a boost leak test. The peace of mind is worth the 10 minutes it'll take.

What does a boost leak test have to do with an exhaust leak? Answers like that belong in a Honda forumROFL

Fail.

Besides that fact, yes it will leak.

I was wondering about a BLT covering the exhaust. I didn't think that it did.

Yep, I didn't think about the weight aspect until you all explained how the turbo connected to it.

Its normal with all the heat and the weight..Buy new studs from the dealer

HAHAHA! Yeah I can picture a bunch of dsm newb's doing boost leak tests
and when you ask them why, they say "Im checking for exhaust leaks"

half of them probably don't even now why they're doing a blt, they just
do it because everyone on tuners is doing it.

Yep the OEM Cast Manifold + The Turbo+ O2 Housing gets pretty heavy+ plus pot Holes speed Bumps ect...This is why so many guys crack Tubular manifolds...I ran a Revhard T4 manifold with A Precision SC61Turbo and a Tail 38mm Wastgate weighted a Ton

You might not hear the leak but most likely you have one. I had one broken stud on the bottom row. When i took off the manifold, both the gasket and manifold showed signs of leaking from that spot.

Exactly. I am new-ish to this forum, but have been working with dsm's for 8 yrs. My first dsm is what got me into being a mechanic. I read, and then read some more. Then got my hands dirty, and loved it......so I made it my profession.

I just wish people would stop spitting out stupid comments and unrelated solutions just because they are too lazy or too ignorant to read about what they are suggesting. Take the initiative to better yourself, so you can give informed, intelligent, and related suggestions to the problems at hand, and be productive member of this community! Rant over! LOL

To the OP, it may not leak to begin with, but it will eventually! There is no point in doing it half-arsed. Your only wasting your time and money. Do it right the first time.

A good way to find out where an exhaust leak is is to block the exhaust flow. Just have somebody cover the muffler outlet with some rags/shirts etc this way it creates more back pressure. If there is a leak, it will be more noticeable.

Could that method create more exhaust leaks...not arguing, just curious.

Thanks

Questions can be a good thing.

I suppose it could. But only if you had a gasket that was torn or weak. This will not damage anything that was not already damaged. The only thing it can damage is a weak or torn paper gasket which would have had to of been replaced anyway. I have never seen it damage a gasket so I either got lucky and never used this technique on a car with a questionable gasket or it is highly unlikely for it to do anything to the already damaged gasket. I would bet the latter since I have done it on many cars.

I figure I should also say that doing this won't cause any running problems from blocking the exhaust flow. This is why I say to use shirts or rags so that exhaust gas can still pass through. Some people recommend a piece of wood, this I would not do.

Heh, the reasons that I asked is because I vaguely remember hearing some awful loud exhaust leaks by doing this in the past (not in the past...this was years ago on a different vehicle...getting old). I guess I just wanted to blame that test and wasn't ready to face up to reality! :D

A rag is a pretty nifty idea. I think that is what I did in the past.

Thanks for your time!

That dude is right ^^^ Have someone hold rags tightly over the tailpipe with the engine idling, and your exhaust leaks will be easy to pinpoint.

Also don't disregard the post about having the support bracket on your downpipe. That's the only thing that prevents your manifold from ripping off the head or cracking.

Oh no, I took that post into consideration. I just didn't comment on it. You are both right on that one!

Thanks for all of the good posts.
