I have a 97 gst. I just pulled the motor for the winter. Going to keep the 7 bolt. Plan on doin a few mods. Im going to install a 16g. I have searched for any kind of info on the coolant lines going to the turbo and I cant find my answer.

I want to remove the coolant lines going to the turbo.
1. What should I do with the line from the block? Can I just block it off?

2. Is there a kit for the tube from the water pump? Or can I customize the stock tube?

3. Are most 16b turbos ok without the coolant (if I use a turbo timer)?

Any pics of this would be great!!
 
1) You can cap it off, but with the high radiant heat in the engine bay it's likely to crack and leak so you'll have to inspect/replace it often.

2) I removed my waterpipe and welded the outlets shut which was difficult because the nipples are brass brazzed to a steel pipe. Dont have any pics though but I got tired of the block off caps continuing to leak and this was a more permanent solution.

3)Yeah they are fine without the coolant lines although there are a lot of opinions about that. I have 40k on my non-coolant cooled 16G without a turbo timer and it's just fine IMO.
 
Im thinking of using a AN fitting for the block. Or even using the hole for a temp gauge.

It would be great if there was a kit that would eliminate the extra lines. If someone knows of a kit, please let me know. :)
 
I sorta thought they came with coolant lines so the factory wouldn't have to put turbo timers in every car?
 
Well Im also doing a wire tuck. So the only reason I want to do away with the water lines is to clean up the engine bay.

I know the turbo has the coolant lines for a reason. But so many sites say its ok not to run coolant in the turbo. It seems like the only problem would be the oil baking on the bearing.

Just my opinion, but every article on this site is going to have 2 views, those that believe it's OK to run no coolant across the bearing carrier housing AND those that will tell you not to!

Go without at your peril and good luck. I decided to keep mine and I just received the AN fittings to convert my lines over to SS. I removed my heater and A/C and did away with the FIAV. So I modified my water pipe and welded the Thermostat housing nipples closed. I can't get pictures for you until Sat, as I'm out of town. I do have the water pipe as it was being done. I'll post them at the weekend.

True, everyone is going to feel different about it. But is there any test's, or proof that will hurt, or help the turbo without the coolant lines (with a turbo timer)?

If I do run the lines I would like to do them like your doing with all SS lines, and AN fittings. I just want a clean looking engine, and engine bay.
 
There are many reasons to eliminate them and no reasons that I've qualified to keep them. But really everyone has on opinion and the debate is probably 50/50. OE does a lot of things on these cars for "a reason" doesnt mean it's a good one. The reason DSMs are notoriously finicky and unreliable is because they were detrimentally over engineered originally. My philosophy is to eliminate redundancy where ever possible in order to simplify the entire device making it easier to service with less points of failure. I dont want to make this thread a debate on turbo coolant theory there's isnt enough quantifiable data to settle the argument, there's only conjecture. The OP wants to eliminate the coolant lines if you can offer advice on how to do that please contribute.
