I'm running the .55 BEP housing and see about 40lb/min at 22psi. At 28psi I'm seeing 47lb/min. Stock motor, stock head. Tuned it myself. Fix your boost leaks. I guarantee that is what causes those low lb/min numbers you are seeing.

Not to get off topic...but Boost leaks do not cause a Low lb/min .. In fact in almost all cases they cause an inflated lb/min.

The only exception to this is a Pre MAF boost leak running in blow through (which will cause NO change in recorded lb/min)

or a PRE turbo post maf Vacuum leak... which is really the ONLY case LB/Min would be lower than expected due to a leak but this is actually a Vacuum leak and vacuum leak only..

The only way a boost leak would cause a Low LB/min is if it were so large that it barely even make pressure...

Assuming the MAF is calibrated correctly ... His low lb/min is probably better explained by poorly adjusted camshafts, a restricted exhaust or some other sort of restriction .....

Anyways...I just wanted to clarify that...back to the Holset dicussions ;-)

Just a friendly reminder:

Please don't post in the Results thread unless you have installed a Holset and have some results, be it dyno, track, or data logs. If you've installed a setup and don't have dyno, track, or data logs, then please post as much info on how/when the boost builds on your car. (ie 3000=10psi, 3500=20 psi, etc) Post as much info as you can about your car and hard parts you've installed (cams, intake, block info, injection system, tires, etc) Whatever you can tell us about the setup of the car is useful to others and cuts down on questions people will have about your particular setup.

Also, for all intensive purposes the older discussion threads are closed. Any new discussion, please post in the most recent discussion thread. (ie this thread) The older threads are only open so the first and last post can be edited for links and info.

Thanks

Newsflash....TalonDave just went 10.14 @ 138 with his HX40 setup, 1.55 60ft. Car was breaking up through 3rd and 4th. It's probably leaner than expected because the high temp today is only around 55*.

He's looking for better times before the end of the day.

Also, Gabe went 11.14 with his full-weight 2G on street tires running a HY35 and a Turbonetics cast manifold. This was done on 93 octane pump gas- no E85, no race fuel.

I am building a 2.3L stroker for my 1G. After reading as much as I can find about Holsets, both here and on other forums, I am sold. I plan to run E85 and am looking for between 600-700 WHP. What I need is some specific direction on an HX40. I have two scenarios that are possible at this moment.

Scenario 1
After reading about Paul's compound turbo setup I'd love to do something similar with an HX40. His recommendation for the horsepower range I want is anything bigger that a 35r being fed into either a 16g or 20g. Which HX40 configuration would you recommend for this setup? 6, 7, or 8, blade and which housing? Billet or cast?

Scenario 2
If I can't find someone to do the fab required for the compound setup at a reasonable cost then the interim solution is just the HX40 by itself until I can find someone cheaper or come up with the extra funds. Does this change the recommendations from scenario 1?

ok. I am ready to get started on my holset build. Now what I have is a 60mm H1E with a 22cm t4 flanged hotside.

My plan was to run the BEP externally gated housing. I was wondering what header would be the best to go with.

jusmx141 may remember the turbo that I am talking about.

was wanting to try and run the wastegate off the 02 housing and have it dumped.

any suggestions?

If you are running the wastegate off of the o2 housing, I would run a cast FP manifold.

Sorry if what I posted earlier was more tuning related then holset related I just felt since it was holset related that it belonged more in here.
For an update on the car with more indformation though here it is. After fixing three large boost leaks and re-logging the car I have gotten to a best of 35lb/min at 21psi. I swear I still have a boost leak but i haven't found it yet around the intake manifold. I may have miss adjusted camshafts as they are bc 272 installed straight up without adjustable cam gears. I have also fixed the ignition miss issue which im sure didnt help the problem. Car was wayyy rich. Leaning it out has helped significantly. Im at 20* timing at 6500rpm without detonation on the 21psi setting pump gas. Im still working out the bugs but im enjoying the set up. Sorry I cant post logs. The laptop I use for internet is different from the laptop for tuning.

I wanted to run a header so I can wrap it to try and help with underhood temps as I don't run ac anymore. Cheapest header I can find that seems like decent quality is the dnp header.

Would a wrapped tubular, or a coated cast be better for under hood temps? :hmm:

Hey every one, Ive been of these forums for quite some time now since i had to retire from the car world for a lil while. Well anyways i have a new project that i have been working on for about 2 months. I recently purchased a EVO 8 and did a Mivec evo 9 motor swap into it. I was running the stock turbo for a good while with good results but now its time to start pushing the stock 7 bolt to new levels. Since i had such a good results with my holset experience i decided i was going to build a turbo setup based on one. I found a hx40 for a good price and i quickly order all the parts to build a turbo manifold. In the evo Crowd there is a very huge movement for Forward facing turbos and it has been proven to help gain a bit more airflow there for i also decided i was going make a custom FF manifold for the car. Well to cut it short i jus wanted to post up my progress so far and show every one were im at with this project so far.

I'm confused that endless site, shows that you need to run more boost to get teh same airflow out of a holset when compared to a garrett. It kinda makes sense.

Like i keep saying with teh price on these holsets jacked up and everyone trying to sell these used at $400+ the craze is kinda over for me.

I and everone else gets their used hx40s and hx35s for under $400 all the time . You know where everyone goes to get them too. I posted here over and over again the place. And another site you frequent ;)

And take a look at those superimposed maps again. All I see is the peak airflow lines about dead on at the same PR, between 3 and 3.2PR. The difference being ...

1. the high boost efficiency favoring the Holset (map heights),
2. lower boost flow favoring the Holset (look where the maps end on the right as you go down in PR),
3. surge points favoring the Holset.
4. peak flow favoring the Garrett by a couple lbs/min (again at about the same PR).

That appears to be an hx40 pro map. **The map** fairs rather well against a t04Z map.

Yes it does favor well against the t04Z. What's intersting is that is not a hx40 pro. The map comparing to the t04Z is the holset t70-R (58mm just like the hx40). But flowing a little over 70lbs/min the t70-R flows more than the hx40-pro.

I would also like to add that I picked up a HX35 for 125 in Good Condition. I rebuilt it for piece of mind and bought the bolt on housing. I only have a total of 230 or so including rebuild and media blasting and I have 200 or so in the housing. Basically I have got a Remand Bolt on hx35 for about 450 Give or take a few.

Shitty video... I know... But you can see that it's running now. Finally got the downpipe built and have had a little bit of seat time tuning it all up. This sucker pulls pretty damn hard at 24psi. As compared to the small 16g it is a little bit laggier.. DUH... But it's tolerable. 1st gear when rolling on the throttle is useless... By the time it's in boost it's time to shift. But, second and on is crazy. I've got an exhaust leak at the vband clamp from the turbo outlet to the downpipe and I need to build a dump tube for the wastegate. Other than that, I'm loving it so far except for my gas mileage seems to be in the 7mpg range. I'll have to work on that. LOL

Anyways, here's pictures of the completed setup and a vid of it idling the first night I got it all started up. Feels good to drive the dsm again.
