i have a 1998 GSX my needle shows around a quarter tank and my gas light is on, is this normal?

I've taken mine pretty low and I've never even seen the light, so that seems odd to me.

Mine sometimes comes on when im at E, its intermittent. When i fill it up on E i only get 10 gallons, which is about 6 gallons short. Trust me, the gas tanks are totally unpredictable as are the gauge/light. Just keep track of how many miles you can go on a tank and fill it up when your reach that mileage instead of relying on the gauge or light. Of course if your messing with the tuning or if you slash your gas lines then this may not be a good idea.

Mine comes on at E as well.
And is only 10 gallons down.
Light can get annoying that early, but at least I know I'll always have enough to make it to the station.

is the float getting stuck at a 1/4? I know on my 1g, the float would get stuck....but the gas light would still come on when I got near E.

when mines on E i still fill up at only 10 gallons so theres way more left after E regardless even when I had my 1g I could still go about 50 ish miles with the light on before I would even get a sense of break up in fuel.

Lowest I ever run mine is to the last of the 4 tic marks on the gauge. Never gone below it and I have never seen my fuel light come on. My 03 Galant will turn the light on just before the 'E' tick mark on the gauge.

My tank get to 1/4 tank and then my needle seems to stop. I haven't tried to run it out of gas yet to see if it just can't go any lower or if its right.

My GST is still in prestine shape. I only seen it once coming back from the Shootout. And the needle was almost on E. You might have a sensor or sending unit going out.

Funny, the 97 TSi I just bought does this same thing. It gets down to just above 1/4 of a tank and the gas light comes on and stays on, yet the needle never drops any further. It just stays there. And I've driven it a good 70 miles beyond that point before fear forced me to stop at a gas station.

I know the previous owner installed a fuel pump, so I'm guessing that maybe they screwed something up. Just not sure how it would result in this.

The Talon I just bought and quickly sold came on at 1/4 tank and the needle didn't go lower. I put gas in just to be safe, even though the needle read a quarter tank, it needed almost a full tanks worth of gas.

You can fix this by:

Loosening the ring that holds the fuel pump down and turn the pump housing back and forth a few times and the arm will go down to normal.

Regardless, you should never let your fuel level go below half on any car. It literally shortens fuel pump life to 1/3rd of what it should be as there is less fuel in the tank to keep the pump cool. This is information that came directly from an Airtex rep who used to come in our store....he claimed that Airtex would go out of the fuel pump business if drivers would keep their tank above half at all times.

I've since owned a Pontiac Sunfire (which my ex later bought and drove to 180k on the original pump), and my '97 Eclipse daily driver which rarely (if ever) drops below half. At almost 140k, it also has the original pump.

Coincidence? Maybe.....but the fact that I don't have to crawl under any vehicle to change a fuel pump based on that man's advice makes me a happy camper.

I think half is a little excessive. 1/4 I agree with, but 1/2 is kind of laughable. The real reason they go out isn't heat it's the sediments on the bottom of the tank getting sucked into the pump and fuel system. The tank is pressurized with fuel vapors which is more than enough to help keep an electric motor cool.

My first Talon came on at E, and I have driven only 5-10 miles on that. My old TSi came on at 1/4 and the light came on. It freaked me out a little. I didnt know which to trust more, the light or the gauge. The 95 TSi I have is at 1/8 and I havent seen the light yet. I have only driven it about 20 miles though. And I cant say about the 97 talon yet. It hasn't seen battery power since ive owned it, but it is a 1/4 :(

yeah, mine has come on at 3/4 of a tank before, and then it has not come on at all when I have been under the E line. Then when it does come on, it usually dims out within a few moments, I think its pretty common for our cars to have inaccurate times when the light comes on. Although it doesn't really worry me, the way I see it, when it gets close to the E line, its time to find a gas station.:D

I hit Empty and after a short drive it'll start to fade on and off and if I continue then it gets bright but I've never been stranded yet, It must have a small reserve when t lights up
