im running a pte 5031e, 50trim.. i dont have balance shafts or oil squirters. should i be using an oil restrictor or not? i have been told both.. now the good part, my turbo had 1200 miles on it and now has alot of shaft play and is burning oil. could to high of oil pressure cause it to have shaft play?

Yes, you need a restrictor. .065 with a -3an line from the ofh is what i would run if i was you.

You should definitely use as restrictor as your turbo has apparently succumbed to failure from excessive incoming oil pressure.

Excessive incoming oil pressure (or poor oil drainage) will cause oil to back up in the center housing. The high pressured oil will enter the journals with such force that it can literally load the journal bearings, causing them to wear into the center housing instead of floating on a thin film of pressurized oil.

If you've caught it early enough and the turbo is fixable, try to get warranty from PTE. If they refuse, PM me and I'll shoot you a rebuild quote.

Without balance shafts and oil squirters or with an unported pressure relief valve, you should probably use the smaller 1/16" (.0625") journal bearing restrictor. You could also move your oil feed line to the head if the idle and cruising pressures are high enough for the Garrett turbo to work properly.
