GM MAF to keep or not to keep

Hello everyone,

I know there is tons of threads and stuff all over the Internet about the GM MAF. However, I rather just ask the question and get some answers in one thread as I really didn't find what I was looking for in other threads.

My question is the following: Is the GM Maf worth it? I have it on my car, but I hear so many things about it being a PITA to tune and dial in, to it being very picky in climate changes, etc. I am just about to switch to DSM Link so do you guys recommend I keep it or switch to a stock MAF? What do you guys suggest?
 
IT really isnt for dialing in, thats what dsmlink or a tuning device is used for now that you know to get a tuning device keep it dont go backwards. Gm maf vs stock gm better thats why i got rid of mine.

What you do you mean it isn't for dialing in? You do have to dial in your MAF, of course the DSM Link helps tremendously when you have that cable they provide. Also, which MAF did you get rid of, the stock one or the GM MAF?

Keep your 2g MAF. The Gm really is a pain to dial in because of climate changes. Maybe if you're in a place where the climate is constant year round then the GM may be a bit better to deal with...

I found that my parameters seemed to change almost everyday I had mine on there.

Go with a 2g MAF or Speed Density.
 
Dialing in i never had problems with it, thats all dials yes to dial but i didnt use i as a only source of tuning.

Umm, actually the GM Maf is on the car already. Not sure if worth removing it.
 
I have the GM MAF with link...you just set your base and aux knob's to the appropriate setting...like mine base2 aux4, with all the dip switches off, and the Link takes care of tuning. In fact...they have a harness out know that eliminates the translator all together...the GM maf Wire it's called. And when you overrun the maf, you can set the link to take over in speed density mode...though, I'd have a good tuner take care of that whole situation. DSMLink...all the way
 
With dsmlink you can tune your car yourself, youll have everything you need plus help from the forums ill be purchasing mine real soon, cant wait.
 
I'm getting the cable so the Translator is already sold basically.
 
Thats why i got i i skipped the 2g maf on my 1g and went to the gm maft no probems love it, link is on the way so the box is out. Watch your grammar.
 
OK, not to highjack the thread, But is the gm maf and translater going to be better then a 2g maf on a
1g? I think its a 1st gen translater as well.

The GM Maf provides better flow and the ability to vent your BOV if you have it on the upper intercooler pipe. However, I keep hearing that they are very picky in climate changes.

If you are using the MAF so you can vent it would be wiser to switch over to a speed density setup on ECMLink v3 or DS-Map. If you have the GM MAF already then use it through ECMLink and not a translator.

So the climate changes affect it when using the translator and not the cable?
 
I cannot say for sure but I believe the translator is the cause for a lot of the issues.

Check out the wiki located on ECMTuning, Inc. and see if you can dig anything up on there on on here. I know there are a couple people using that setup and perhaps they may chime in if they are online.
 
Well I just picked up an ecu with a stage3 chip in it. So I can remove the chip and switch to dsmlink. I have a 2g maf with a dijon hard pipe and hks high flow filter. But have someone wanting to trade my 2g setup for the gm maf and translator. So I cant deside wether to trade or not. I like the idea of going sd with link. But it will be a while before I can get dsmlink. Would it be worth going to the gm setup then sd. Or stick with the 1g setup till I get link. And just sell the 2g setup and apply that money to link.
 
If you are planning on going to SD in the future then just save up for it as there is no reason to buy parts twice especially since yours currently works and I know you aren't making enough power to have the 1g filter as a big restriction.

Yes, ECMLink is just a programmable chip. Also, keep your BOV recirculated until you either go SD or choose to go with GM MAF in blow through mode.
 
for speed density, you can go old school with a VPC and GCC combo, or just run a gm maf with ecmlink.
 
You run speed density by wiring in an IAT (Intake Air Temperature) and a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. Only able to be done on an AEM EMS, ECMLink v3 or DS-Map+Ostrich/Jackle (one of them but it's only for a 1g)

It's a much better setup than a GM MAF as a boost leak ANYWHERE will not affect your ability to drive. If you leak post sensor on the GM MAF it will be affecting how you drive via fuel, just like on the stock MAS

If you really plan on going with ECMLink v3 instead of flashing your ECU then go speed density. If you are opting the other way then just stick with the GM MAF.
