Hello, I was hoping someone could give me some advice. Yesterday I noticed when I was driving around, a blue cloud of smoke come out of my car, but it only does it during boost, driving around without boost or even sitting in idle there is no smoke at all. I am thinking that seems like it is an oil leak in my Turbo, either seals or something else? I spoke with a guy I know that has dealt with turbos, he figured my turbo is filling the intercooler with oil on the vaccuum cycle and then when it switches to boosting its blowing that oil into my cylinders. What I want to know, is If i need to replace my stock turbo, Id preffer to replace it with one that is the same size etc so I don't end up having to tear down my motor and redo that too. Id preffer to do it as cheaply as possible, but I understood when I bought the car that it wasn't a Cheap to maintain toy! So any help/tips here would be great, id even consider a used turbo replacement maybe if it is in good shape etc.

Thanks

well if its the 2g gsx that you list, you are running a t-25 stock. It sounds like the oil seals in the turbo went. you can find those for pretty cheap on here. I would also take that intercooler off whenever you replace the turbo and clean it

Yes its a 97 Eclipse GSX. So I was told that if i take off the intake hose, i should try to move the shaft inside to test for play? if there is any "in and out" play the berrings are gone? Thanks for the fast responses.

hey bro check the turbo for play and if your tight on cash pm me and I'll show u what to do, theres a good rebuild kit for $60 and its not hard to rebuild it, like i said pm me if you need the specs with a phone number and ill hit u up tonight

If it's a 2G and it has higher mileage on the stock T25, the turbo is probably done if you're seeing a noticeable amount of smoke under boost.

A rebuild is a good option if your compressor and turbine wheels have no damage, otherwise replacement is the only option. I wouldn't trust a used T25; it's hard to tell true mileage on one of these turbos, and I've already disassembled T25's that had no shaft play at all, and the thrust plate was all cracked to hell and ready to break.

If It comes to replacement, i called the dealership and they quoted me 2000 bucks to replace the turbo, that seems really steep for a stock replacement. What do you all recommend that will bolt up to stock parts, but not be any larger then the turbo that I already have?

If your really looking into cheapest/easiest possible route, then a rebuild might be what you should be looking into... If your planning on wanting to change the turbo and get a little more power out of it in the future and keep cost down you can try and get a 16g... will bolt up, you will need a install kit for this to help make the swap quick and painless... but this is a turbo mod and might require a little bit of mechanical experience. I know you said you did not want to go larger than what you have already, but this is a common turbo for our cars.

A basic upgrade without an install kit is the T-28. They have them new on cimotorsports.net and dsmparts.com.

If you want cheap, spend the $150 or whatever is costs to have Justin rebuild your t-25. Spend another $30ish in gaskets, 5 quarts of oil, a gallon of coolant, and replace it yourself, it's really simple.

You can find a used, good shape T25 for less than $100. Dealers always charge high. Or have Justin rebuild it for a few hundo. Maybe less.

Just rebuild it or get someone to rebuild it for you. No need to spend the extra cash just for another turbo with more wear when you can rebuild for about $60 and be as good as new. And DO NOT spend $2000 on a t25. Search around on here for the rebuild thread its really simple.

LOL $2000, insane! I say either rebuild it or look into a t-28 or 16g.

Well, I had a good laugh on the phone when he told me the price, and honestly I am pretty sure he was in shock himself. Anyway, ill check for play in the turbo tomorrow and find out if it may be more then just my seals gone. in the mean time, anyone have a t28 or t25 kicking around they'd let go cheap? I would also like to thank everyone for such fast responses, this site is going to make owning/working on a Eclipse WAY easier! While I have a few people on the topic of my car, I also wonder why i have to hold my keys against the driver side window to get the car to unlock? is there a way I am able to increase the range on it, its kind of annoying?

he could go 16g, but then comes the install kit that is needed. but it really depends what he wants to do with the car and how much he wants to spend

Stock is fine with me, I just really want to be able to drive it again :) Winter is coming and i'm planning to put it away before the first snow. I don't want to make it a racer, I bought it for my wife to daily drive during the summer months as well. There is just something about a woman driving a Manual Sports car am I right?:D I do appreciate everyone's input tho, its been very helpful.

I just took off my air intake and reached in and got a hold of the shaft and had a lot of in and out play, maybe 1/4 an inch? hard to say with it still mounted to the engine, but is it enough that I should be worried about it being bearings?

My stock t 25 didn't have any shaft play with 100,000 miles on it. But if I was getting on it to the point that I could hear the BOV when I up shifted it blew a big white could of white smoke. If I throttled back to let the boost drop before I shifted I didn't get the cloud behind me. It was damned annoying but you can baby it for a little while and save up for a new turbo or just to make it till winter storage then save up.

Instead of rebuilding I just went with a new MHI Evo3 16G. The E316G has much more potential than a T28 and the only difference with the installation is you need to bolt on a J pipe with two bolts and add a pipe to the intercooler. Extreme PSi sell an install kit with an extra pipe that allows you to install a 16G and hook it to the stock sidemount intercooler. The T28 is actually more expensive than the 16G and has less power potential. I would just go with the 16G or at least a 14B off of a 1st generation.

well looking at your situation, buying a t-25 off the forum would be the cheapest and quickest way. If you would like some more power than go with the 14b or the 16g. there will be some extra down time, but the gains in power and potential are worth while

I thought I should post some pictures of my Car since were discussing it. One of my pitcrew as well! As you can see, my hood was Carbon fiber and in rough shape, but 7 hours of wet sanding, and 1.5 hours of buffing, and it shines like new! Yes, if you are asking if that is a car seat in the back of my car, it is. My daughter is very proud of her "Cute little sports car".

Probably a silly question, but If i were to find a turbo that potentially boosts more then stock, is it possible to tune it down to the same psi boost im getting now, as to not mess up my internals?

That's the general idea behind guys using, say, an Evo III 16G. You must keep it at stock boost levels to avoid doing damage.

The trouble with that is that it is indeed a bigger turbo, so it's going to be noticeably laggier than your T25....and without the ability to run more boost to offset the lag, the car is going to feel slower.
