O.k. I just got the car running again from a fuel pump issue.

Now, I'm finding out that if I really get on the accelerator in 1st or 2nd gear (so far) I can feel the clutch pedal actually being pulled to the floor board (without me putting any pressure on it at all). I then have to put my foot to the side of the pedal and use the side of my shoe to pull the pedal back up to its normal position.

I do get the occasional chatter when I take off, but that goes away when the car warms up. Also, when I'm at a stop with the clutch depressed all the way, I have no problems going from 1st into reverse and back again.

Is this a clutch issue? or a pedal issue? or a slave cylinder issue? Or do I need to give you guys more information issue?

Do I need to expand on the problem?

Is there any fluid leaking at all that you know of?

If not that almost sounds like a issue that I read about here:

RRE's Clutch And Flywheel Tech Info

Look towards the bottom in the clutch adjustment section under "ghost pedal". There is an internal seal in the master cylinder that allows the fluid pressure to internally bypass it if it is damaged and the pedal will drop or stick to the floor. If that is the case then replacing or rebuilding the master cylinder will fix this.

I hope that helps!

Thanks so much for the response. I will take a look at replacing it soon.

Hey DP, I also read through the rest of that information on that page and found the link to "see how your screwed" quite interesting. It would seem that I have a weird sound coming from under the timing belt cover, and I have a hard time getting it into gear after a hard left hand turn. I think I'm screwed.

Ahh so now you think you have crank walk? Someone else chime in if I am wrong. But by 98 the 7-bolt had a revised, split thrust bearing, and weren't as prone to crank walk as the earlier 7-bolts. That being said any engine can crank walk. So it's possible. I just didn't think it was as likely.

Are you 100 percent sure on that? As you didn't say anything about noise. or the pedal sticking to the floor during left turns. Unless by chatter you meant a sound like http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclipsetech/crankwalk/2gcrankwalk.wav coming from under the timing belt? that really blows if so!

(The pauses in the woodpecker sound is the clutch pedal moving in and out.)

I definitely don't have that sound coming anywhere from my car. I do however seem to have a much more difficult time shift up to 3rd after taking a left hand turn at a fair speed. The sound coming from under the timing belt is more like a loud "hum" that is fairly constant in sound, sometimes it does go away but always returns. I originally thought it was one of my pulleys. Maybe I was right with the original thought. As for the pedal to the floor, it only seems to happen if I take off really fast or get up past 5000 rpm's in 2nd or 3rd, I then feel the pedal get "sucked" to the floor and have to use the side of my foot to get it back up. If I don't have crank-walk, I would be stoked. Seeing how I have only had the car for about a month, I've found numerous technical issues wrong with it. I will enjoy the challenge of getting this car to where I want it though.

Well, we'll stick with the clutch issue for now. As the hum sounds isolated.

The sinking pedal still sounds similar to that seal problem. You keep stating what I put in bold. From all that I've read about similar symptoms that sound like that "seal" problem. They speak of how when you press your clutch in slowly, the pedal falls to the floor. If you press the pedal really fast it seems to work sometimes but not 100%. Do you notice a difference that sometimes coincides with the you changing the speed at which you engage the pedal? Also define "Sucked" you feel it drop while you are engaging the pedal, or it just drops by itself, with no influence?(if my question makes sense) Also I don't think you stated if you notice your losing fluid, if you checked all your lines for leaks, check your master cylinder and your slave etc...? Also If they are both stock and you have high miles, you may wanna replace them anyways.

Here is some more info I found:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drivetrain-tech/367615-clutch-pedal-falls-floor.html

In the first post he talks about the seal problem. He also has a link to a post that has a simple complete breakdown diagram of the clutch master cylinder.

If I find anything else I'll shoot it your way. If you find out what it is, or figure out more details keep us updated!

Hope this helps! :thumb:

The Crankwalk has been confirmed and I'll be down and out for awhile.
