Im looking to buy my first DSM. Im looking for the FWD gs-t model, and I found a really nice 1998 Spyder. The only problem is that on the CarFax it was issued a NAM Title, Not Actual Mileage. I read a few other posts on here, but none of them said whether something like this would still be worth buying. The car has AMAZING paint for being a 1998, and the convertible top is in pretty decent condition too. The interior is okay, no rips or anything, but the turbo whines pretty loud and it seems to have a rattle that makes noise at WOT. He wants 4000 for it. Is this something I should still look into buying, or should I just keep looking? Thanks.

I would take the car to a good shop or even a Mitsu dealer to have it inspected first. The turbo n rattle issues should be addressed or at least you should know in detail what needs to be fixed before buying.

I do not know what the rattle could be but from a little research I bet the turbo whine means the turbo is going out... My dad used to be a mechanic but isnt a stock turbo somewhere in the $600 dollar range?

It is an automatic. It sounded like the rattle was coming from upfront somewhere, almost in a way from the dash.

Unfortunately there are no pictures, but the paint is pretty much flawless and the top is slightly faded and has a slight rip near one of the windows. I have only drove the eclipses a few times but it seemed a little slower than the previous ones I have driven. I dont plan on selling the car I buy anytime soon, but I dont want to be stuck with something forever either. I also read that in a lot of states that after 10 years no one really cares since they just expect it to be over 100K. Anyone know if that is true in CO? I am pretty specific on what I want, for some reason the talons just don't look as cool to me as the eclipses. My dream car is a 2nd gen spyder or not, and the gst or gsx, and I really really want it to be red.

99' Eclipse Spyder GST $4000

Ahhh, I see. I didn't know you were geared toward an Eclipse. However, I will say, the car I posted is probably one of the best local deals right now. It was built by a meticulous owner and is pretty quick. It'll run in the low 12's as it sits now and that's much faster than the red eclipse in question :D

Either way, even with the low mileage, $4000 seems too high for the Eclipse with all that it has wrong...

Yeah I was hoping that with the messed up title I could get it for at least 3500. That talon is definitely nice, I was also hoping to find something pretty much bone stock. I bought a supercharged Pontiac Trans Am 2 years ago and I wanted it to be a fun street car but also to go up to Bandimere and race it but it has caused me nothing but problems. I have put TONS of money into it and it just isnt a racecar. I would rather have something that is fun to drive but will last a long time and not have to replace parts every 5 seconds.

I completely agree with your outlook on a reliable and fun car. However, as you may know, even a stock DSM can be a project in itself! I'll keep my eyes pealed for clean 2G Eclipses (Spyder especially).

With a weird title, I'm always leery. I've had some bad past experiences with anything but a clean title in hand. I'd shoot much lower... somewhere around $2500 maximum and see what happens. Explain that, had the title been completely clean and the car in perfect condition, you would give what they are asking. The economy is bad and you have $$$ on your side. If that doesn't work, I'm sure if you're patient something better will pop up. :thumb:

Alright thanks for all your help. I dont care if its a spyder or not, I really just want the turbo edition.

LOL Im looking to spend about 5,000. I already have a fast car so now I just need a daily driver.

I think you should just offer like $3,000 or so with the problems and what not.
If it needs a new turbo just put on a new or used 16g with all the money you saved on the car and call it good the stock turbo sucks anyway mine went out the first week I had my car :D LOL
And for rattles you will get all those figured out as long as it’s not a tick or sound like valves and pistons or lifter noise I would call it Ok.
For how old these cars are getting it could just be cheap plastic clip that has broke and just needs to be replaced just don’t let the owner know that so you can get the car for as cheap as possible. :thumb:

See you at some DSM meets if you get it and welcome to the forum:)

Im definitely still thinking about it, its exactly what I want except for that little tiny problem. Thanks for the welcoming, I will probably see you all at Bandimere sometime, Ive been racing there since I was a kid.

By the way, if I buy this thing and it blows up, you all are coming over and helping me do a motor rebuild!
