how much faster is stick vs auto in a gst...
ive only driven standard this would be my first automatic
thank you and god bless you

I have broken many transmissions. Grenaded one at the track, destroyed multiple center diff's at the track. Then I learned how to launch at the track.

You can have crazy power on manual's. You can't dump the clutch, that's where tranny's break and drive trains get destroyed.

Driver error is the key to failure.

I can show you 2 logs of how much driver error happens. When I put the car in 3rd and it gets into its torque range and just lets go. 6 months into a glorified stock trans. Then 6 months later same thing with 4th.

I love 5spds definatly, so fun to drive...im still procrastinating about swapping my stuff, but I have a built auto sitting waiting, a car thats ready, and all I need to do is get it done. Everytime I think of doing another 5spd, I think of how sucky it is hazing the tires, and worrying about what im going to break. I mean if you could just kill a 100 dollar 3rd gear, and replace that gear it wouldnt be so bad, but when that 100 dollar gear takes out 1600 dollars worth of good parts it really is a kick dead straight in the balls.

It really is upto you. I enjoy driving manual much more, but my car is not a track car where the automatic would be better and easier. But doing it with a manual makes that time feel much better imo. If you are using it as a DD or highway cruiser go manual. Its more fun, and keeps you awake.

Apparently you have a crap load of driver error.....

Shep Trans Stage 3 (now grinding)

Gotta love a grinding "Shep Trans Stage 3". :ohdamn:

Anyways, back on topic. I love my auto. Ive had 4 DSMs before all 5spd. Do I miss them sometimes, yes. Would I buy another 5spd, no.

i've had a crap load of fun. the grinding comes from doing donuts in a field and my axle popping out and leaking all my fluid. :thumb: then driving home. \

I do understand, that i have not yet hit my mark of 600whp. Most people don't want more than 400, so the case still stands that manuals are awesome and fun.

But i have witnessed a awd vr6 gti pushing close to 700 horse, rip third gear completely out trying to do a pull on the highway three different times.

Track cars need to be auto eventually, otherwise drive whatever the hell you want.

Hell even track cars can drive whatever the hell they want but there's no doubt in any reasonable persons mind that autos nowadays are the superior tranny for high speed passes.

Hmmm. Seems like we have a war of transmissions here. Personally i swapped a auto into my car(manual kept breaking). So your manual is that great? Really? Have you ever tried racing a auto with similar mods?.......

Why isn't anyone really posting the obvious?

Manual you can do more things with like drifting or just engine breaking a lot of people bi*** about having to drive in stop and go conditions but I've only owned manual cars and it has never been a problem to me.

When I drive auto cars it gets real old real quick to not be able to do the same shit I'm used to with manual and I can tell how little control I actually have over the car.

With that said I was actually thinking about building a 2gb auto rocket for FWD freeway pulls with a huge ass turbo and some minor tranny cooling mods.

If this guy is not putting up serious power, and gets FWD Auto would be a good choice. The only reason the manual "feels" faster basically is the extra gear / faster gear ratios. I am not sure if you have check yet, but as far as I know, automatic transmissions cost more to work on and are heavier. I am not certain how much it costs to upgrade the AT build and torque converter for Drag use but that would be my main concern. Find out what type of upgrades are required for good power in an A/T and how much that will cost you. Clutches in manuals are pretty cheap to upgrade.

Actually a stock auto with line pressure mod will take just about anything. People run 8 second passes with stock auto's and converters all the time. As far as drag racing goes my auto always gets 1.4-1.5 60 foots at the track. Every pass. Personally I feel the auto is as much fun to drive.

Driving stick makes you more of a man. And a more intelligent driver.

As for speed, it depends on the driver and the transmission. A performance auto will beat a stock 5-speed. And vice-versa. An experienced stick driver can shift within .005 seconds of an auto.... It just depends on you and your control over your feet.

So does pouring money into manual transmissions that will keep breaking. That would get boring quick.

hahahah all of my DSM friends have stick gsx/gst and im the only one with an auto and let me tell you this guys..... their cars are always on the garage gettin their transmission fixed :tease: LOL. and you cant say its cus they are more modified than mine cus we all got pretty much similar setups :hellyeah: and I drive mine evry day LOL unlike them.

I don't know if it's the same for 2G's but 1G turbo cars are a tad different with manual and A/T's. The A/T 1G's have smaller injectors and of course a different ECU to control that, and a smaller turbo. That's my only gripe when it comes to 1G's.

This question has been played out in this forum. If you're going for crazy drag times (10's and below) go auto. If you want a true sports car, go manual. The auto's available for these cars are not up to par or comparable to the newer autos in the gtr/porsches/vw's so don't compare them. The auto's are more reliable, but limit you to slow shifts and would kill you with slowness on any road course.

The person above me made a great point, sports cars are not offered in autos- they are manuals. There is a reason for this.

If you want a true sports car you have a to get a different car. These are a coupe. A sports car is 2 doors, 2 seats.

You say that to Porsche 911 and GTR owners..

I will, where are they?

Sedan: 4 doors, 4 seats (or 5 with a bench seat in the back)
Coupe: 2 doors, 4 seats " "
Sports car: 2 doors, 2 seats

Cars like those can be sporty, or sport compact, or whatever you can pull out your ass to call them, but they aren't sports cars.

Oh yes, wiki is god and knows everything. I enjoy reading wikis, but it doesn't mean everything on there is truth. Go to a chevy dealer, ask to see sedans, they will show you 4-door cars. Ask to see coupes and you will see 2-door cars with more seats, ask to see a sports car and you will see a corvette.

Nissan GT-R - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Porsche 911 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

both coupes.

Toyota MR2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chevrolet Corvette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

both sports cars.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

a 4 door sedan.

this thread has gone on really long. it's just a matter of opinion on what you want to drive. for winning drag races, science shows auto is best. and i hold to it that an auto with a tcugo or something like that would even be better than manual for road racing type things.

im not one to bash but a post that attacks with ignorant/wrong opinions to say the least can't beat the facts.

I would hate to break my boost. But you can brake boost a manual. :thumb: It's called two step. I have 26lbs when i launch. Guess you didn't know manuals can do that.

Just because some of the fastest DSM's are auto's doesn't mean a thing. If you get a talented driver, then there is no problem with a manual.

Also you can use a no lift to shift feature for manuals. :thumb:

why would you hate to brake boost? because it is ALOT less harsh on your motor?

all you need is a tranny cooler and your set to brake boost anytime you wish.

NLTS is also pretty harsh on a motor and doesn't make much sense when a quicker shift works even better.

when you blow an auto all you have to change are clutches. this is alot cheaper than getting a new M/T because you sent a mess of gears threw the case.

hitting 26psi with two step on a 16g isn't something i would be bragging about.

if your a talented driver going faster than 10s in a traditional M/T it isn't going to last to long, no matter how talented..

:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

im not hating on anybody except maby above but there are many kinds of car builders out there and most of them fit into two groups.

one that builds a car to have fun

one that builds a car to win

they both may perform but only one consistently wins..

Please tell that to my insurance company. ROFL

IMO drag racing is about 2 people with similarly matched cars racing to a finish line. When you have an automatic it takes away from a lot of the driver element and puts it more into the car. Couple that with AWD and consistency becomes a lot easier. (Not trying to bash AWD because i dream of having a TSi :D)
