alright so ive searched and im tired as hell and just cant seem to find exactly what im looking for. i bought a 90 tsi awd and its cool and all but its just not as fun as it could be being an auto tranny. when i lose i want to be able to blame it on the miss-shifts. :thumb: but basically im just asking if anyone can point me to a write up for a 1g awd auto to awd 5 speed conversion. or give me a parts list so i know exactly what i need. i got some stuff written down but im sure im missing something and definitely any thing i might run into that someone can help me out with. thanks guys any input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. looking to buy 5 speed swap stuff :hellyeah:

I just finished the swap on my 91 tsi. You will need shifter assembly(since yours is a 90 u will have to use a 90 shifter assembly because they are different than later yrs.), shift cables, peddle assembly, master clutch assembly, clutch line, tranny, tranny mount, tcase, rear end(5 speed have different gearing), clutch, pressure plate, all hardware that is associated with the clutch. 5speed flywheel, flywheel bolts( they are longer than the auto bolts), I would recomend getting all your stuff from a donar car so as to not lose any mounting hardware. hope it helps.

P.S. sorry if some info is a little off.

Hate to be the one to bring bad news but the 90's did have an auto awd. Secondly if youre using the car at the drag strip auto is the shit. There are some mods you can do that will make it a hell of a lot better, and more consistant. Personally id stick with the auto if you have it already and plan on doing serious drag racing. If you just want something to play around with then yea 5spds are good. No matter what year the car is you can get anything 90 to 94 shifter wise. The 91-94 shifters are a little better as they are smaller and have a little better designing in them. They all bolt in the same, just the lengths of the base and the shifter are different. But make sure if you have a 90 shifter, you have a 90 tranny and tase or atleast have the brackets that hold the cables to the trans to match the year of the cables. The Brackets on the tranny for the cables are different between the 90 and 91-94 cars. 90's i believe are straight as the 91-94's are slanted or vise versa. Been awhile since i did this on my car so sorry if im not 100% on details. Also the tranny and tcase must be either both 90 or both 91-94 models. And actually if you can find a good junkyard with a few dsm's you should easilly be able to get everything you need.

The car is pending sale but auto or not its grown on me never to big on 1g's but they are starting to look badass to me now. But I'm not really into drag racing I'm sure it would see its fair share of track time though haha I'm basically after a fun quick dd. My 98 gs wasn't quite quick enough so I got this as a project so maybe ill keep it auto I'm sure it will be fun. It would be nice to hear from some auto drivers!:hellyeah:

I didn't know they made Auto 90 turbo's. I knew that the 1.8's came with an Auto option. 90 auto's must be ultra rare. Gratz on your find, if it's a true 90 I'd keep it that way just for the fact that you don't see 90 auto's.

They are exceptionally rare. I think I've only seen one or two. My budy owns one of them. Even if you look up the numbers for the tranny's and tcases they arent listed for the 90 in auto, but they did come auto. Just very few in numbers.

Umm...he must have an ultra rare one, since CAPS doesn't even list an auto tranny until 1991.

So, when you go to order parts for one of these 1990 Auto AWD trans/transfer cases, how are you supposed to be able to get anything....if the numbers aren't listed? That mean you are just shit out of luck?

Also the tranny and tcase must be either both 90 or both 91-94 models.

And one last thing. The year of the transmission doesn't mean a thing. It's all about the output shaft in the transmission. I've got a transfer case out of a 1990 car mated to a 1992 transmission. Guess I'm breaking one of your rules huh? Maybe I'll start looking for some of those 1990 auto awd part numbers now. ;)

Our cars are so old that you probally have to phsically verify the spline count on the tcase/tranny. My beast is 21 years old and others are just as old. Over the course of the 20 years swaps could of been done already. Or the input shafts swapped as well. Also could be one of those SNAFU trannies where the factory just had them in stock and didn't have the newer ones yet so used the old style. They did weird things 20 years ago;D Not like today and everything is computer controlled inventory and shipping.

Wow I guess I got a good deal for 400 bucks :hellyeah: I'm pretty sure its a 90 last I looked I'm pretty sure the old reggie was on it and said 90 so maybe ill restore it and keep it original

Yea, these may not have a large following like mustangs, corvettes, or trans ams, but there getting to the point where there "collectable" Don't know if I'd go that far in getting collector plates but I sure do like my DSM.

What's the build date of your car? The VIN? Maybe a swap? The first listed trans available in Auto turbo DSM was a build date of 6/90, which would be a 1991 model.

Better not be a 5spd to auto swap.. :ohdamn: the registration sticker says 1990. And you need vin and title which has the vin unless its a dmv error. Maybe ill check the vin see if it is really a 90

Auto is better for DD anyway, 5 speed is fun but gets annoying after a while driving in a city.

My n/t was 5 speed and I didn't mind driving in the city but yeah when traffic is backed up its a pain in the ass and I was tempted more to burn out or floor it so I guess this is what I need to keep me from trouble. AWD = no burnouts, automatic = no unecessary gear runs :thumb:
