Well I'm selling my 2g N/T and I'm going to pick up either a 1g GSX or 1g TSi. I'm going to have around $5,000 to spend on performance mods, gauges, electronics, etc. Assuming I get a stock 1g GSX/TSi, what should I get when I have $5g's to spend. I know the basics and have this...

ACT 2600 Clutch/Flywheel
SAFC II
Turbo Timer
Autometer Gauges - Boost, Air/Fuel, Oil Pressure
Internals - Rods and Pistons
Walboro 255lph Fuel Pump
Boost Controller - Elec or Manual, Depends on how much money I have
3" Turboback Exhaust

Now I'm not sure what size turbo, injectors, other things I should get with the money I have to spend, can you guys help me out?

What are your plans for your car? Is it going to be a daily driver during the week and then a weekend warrior? Or is it going to be all track or all street. Do you have any horsepower goals number wise? If you give us this info we will be able to give you better answers. :thumb:

I'll be taking it to the track, weekend warrior, but I still want to be able to use it quite often, not as much as a dd, but not track only. I didn't really have any expected goals, but I was assuming I could get like 350-400? maybe more?

Do yourself a favor and use a significant portion of that money on the drivetrain. Spend 2grand on a trans from one of the major builders, and some prothane motor mounts, and a nice flywheel clutch combo. Since its not a DD, you may want to look at a 6puck clutch. If your leaning toward more of a daily driver, then you would probably hate yourself driving a 6puck in traffic. Half the problem with these cars is not getting the horsepower, its getting it to the road, and once its on the road, keeping it reliable. While reliable DSM seems like an oxymoron, the more you do to safeguard that HP the better off you will be.

ACT 2100 clutch

S-afc II or DSMlink

550cc injectors

190lph fuel pump or a 255lph fuel pump but if you choose the 255 get a FPR(right now on extremepsi.com they have a good fuel package deal for $599 you get a fuel pump either a 190 or a 255 your choice of injectors and a apex'i s-afc II)

Dont bother with the autometer A/F gauge but the boost gauge is alright i have one, if you want a A/F gauge get the aem wideband uego:thumb:

Hallman pro manual boost controller

2.5 inch or 3 inch turboback

Ported exhaust manifold or evo gt exhaust manifold and ported o2 housing for better flow

Either a Evo III big 16g or a Big T-28 depending on what you want out of the turbo these turbos are good for 300+whp with the right tuning

hope this helps you, Jeff:dsm:

if the motor is in good condition, dont bother with the internals yet, follow our own dsmtuners.com upgrade path. Id go with a DSMlink over an AFC, plus they are cooler:thumb:

So start with some maintnence, change the timing belt and all associated items, this is about 500 if you do it yourself. Then throw on a set of new spark plugs and wires. Change the oil.

Now get yourself some gauges and after you install them maybe get a dyno run so you have a baseline.

So far that was a quick grand.

Hope this helps start you out:thumb:

Well, now that I think of it, I guess it will be a daily driver. I'll most likely drive it to school everyday and stuff. So yeah, it'll be a dd.

No need to spend all the money up front, BEFORE it breaks ;)

And do some searching, all this has been listed over and over.

Just make sure not to build up on a 7 bolt engine (1992.5 and newer), if the car you buy has a 7 bolt, eventually you will want to build a 6 bolt up to swap.

Honestly dude i dont think you need to dive into a project unless you've got some serious plans right off the batt. Just follow the upgrade paths and youll know where your money should go. Forget about the motor internals for now there is a large handful of ppl making that kind of power no problem on stock motor.

I agree with whoever said concentrate on drivetrain, 2100 clutch with a six puck should be a great start for your goals... A built trans will do you a great favor, but will eat away at your $5K pretty quickly.

nice motor mounts(or at least the bushings for the stock ones)

get your exhaust first, a 3" downpipe and all the way to the back end(some will disagree with that, its up to you)
buy yourself a hand grinder and port the exhaust manifold and o2 housing out. thats cheaper than a new manifold and o2 setup

boost gauge is a must, hallman pro is nice
the 1g bov should work fine for a while

front mount intercooler would be a great idea too

and then the fuel... 255 pump plus a fpr if your serious about "350-400 hp or maybe more"
+wideband
have you thought about ecmlink?

ill bet you could get away with spending $3k in your first mods and be REAL happy for a while... do yourself a favor and save some money. youll need it for beer and stuff anyway while your at school :aha:

There's nothing wrong with a built 7 bolt.

He probably picked up a nice DSM, didn't spend any cash on the mantainence, bought a huge turbo, cranked the boost way up. Then on his way to school one day for a final, the dsm left him sitting(like they always do when u DD). This in affect made him miss the final, get a F. Then he lost his scholarship and now he flips burgers at Mcdonalds. Oh and driveS a obnoxiously loud riced out honda.

Just a theory. :)

According to some threads that he started, he got a 92 Laser, smashed a deer with it almost immediately, bought a 94 n/t Talon to swap the front end onto it, then he wanted to put an STi hood on his car. He also had a buddy that told him "if you want more boost, just take the wastegate hose off and don't boost over 20psi". I'm not kidding.

So I'm sure that car is in the junkyard now.

OMG thats hilarious :hellyeah: you never know right . He mighta learned something ,, btw i hope he didnt get a rice burner so to speak LOL
