Hi guys...been a while since I have posted...owned a DSM, but have always been lurking. Since the Talon got sold, I have owned a few different turbo cars and worked on alot of friends stuff. My family grew so I got back in the market for a 4 door family car, I wanted to tweek on it, so rwd and turbo was my criteria. I found nice Volvo 940 2.3 turbo.

Not to bore you guys.....I am just about done with a new engine...stroked it to 2.5 litres, installed a twin cam head, running a Evo3 16g all ported, and yesterday I got the engine running on a 1990 1g engine management. I worked with Tom Dorris at ECMlink and installed the full version of V3. Still need to get the car on the street, but it idles, starts, revs way better than the stock adaptive non programmable ecu.

Still alot of work to get the harness all tidied up, but heres a link to the Volvo board Im on and my build thread.

941g 16v turbo build - Turbobricks Forums

I love the V3 and will be going SD, dual table code very soon. Im working closely with English Racing in WA, to get this tuned once the new motor is in.

You should post this up on the ECMLink forums, the folks over there would probably be very interested. :)

Cool build, more and more people building Volvo's these days. I'd have to agree with the folks on TurboBricks, though; at 2.5L, you may find that turbo is a bit on the small side. On the other hand, spool ought to be fun. :)

Cool, I wll keep this updated when I get it dynod.

Looks like a great build, and your fabrication skills are obviously very good. Thanks for the link to the progress. I'd love to see an overall shot of the car, and the finished engine bay once you get that rats nest of wiring cleaned up LOL.

And don't let anyone tell you an Evo3 16g is mostly a 300whp turbo. There are plenty of people making well over that mark, even up at my elevation (6000'). I just made 328whp/361wtq up here in awd form. While the numbers from English may be pie in the sky for most folks, 350ish is not. Good luck!

Off topic here in the ECU forum....but here is a pic of my car.

Ill post up tomorrow on the ECM forums

That's a nice 940 you got there. The Ecmlink setup is great. I use to have a clean 240 about 7 years ago. Before I bought my first DSM a couple years ago, I was looking for a RWD turbo Volvo. I never found a good one so, I bought an Eclipse. Keep us updated.

Thankyou. My family was growing and needed something rwd and turbo charged with 4 doors......searched CL and this car popped up. I just got new wheels for it and have this whole build underway. The original owner did a great job at getting it started....im just finishing it.

I grabbed a log today....drived ok under cruise....is rich, like 10.0 rich under boost near 15psi and have a weird lean condition just out idle.

I noticed that the O2 is not swinging in closed loop at a hot restart, or even when I come to a stop and have the idle reingage. Seems like it take 15 seconds for the closed loop operation to start again. Sometime the engine will die before the swings start again.

I had to lock in openloop and dump a ton of deadband to get it to idle in the 14's....other wise it would lean out and die before the O2 operation would start.

Im sure im missing something, have a friend from English Racing coming over tomorrow to help tune a little. Enough so I can pull this engine and install the new one and get it broke in without ecu issues

2.3l
55lb delpshi
sheetmmetal intake
all 1g electronics
Knock is not hooked up right now.
hks ssqv
15g turbo

Nathan, glad to see you on here. What I find so cool about this project is that it's *not* a 4G63 dropped into a Volvo (at least not yet). It's actually a Volvo engine being controlled by a DSM ECU. People have talked about using our ECUs and ECMLink as basically a "standalone" for other platforms out there and this is a great example of exactly that being done.

Very nice work, Nathan. Definitely keep us posted.

Its been a while for an update...but the motor is done, all reinstalled in the car.

But now I have a no spark, no fuel dillema. This a copy from ECMlink.

I have posted in the general with my V3 in Volvo setup. Had car running prior to tear down and engine rebuild.

All is done and tryinig to start car now. No spark or fuel. I have fuel pressure, and have pressure while cranking. I have swapped the CAS and tried another coil pack.

I do notice when I unplug the CAS and plug it back in, the IAC motor twitches a little, seems wierd.

So where I have the coil and the CAS, along the firewall in a RWD car, I accidently plugged the coil into the CAS, and the CAS plug into the coil. This led me to the change of the CAS and still no spark.

With Key on I get 12 volt harness power at all check points.

Is there any way to test trigger the coil packs at the Igniter pack. I did try another one of them too and get power where I should.

Im sure its something domb, like I forgot to solder a new wire in or something,. but I can crank and no spark.

Could swapping the plugs have damaged the ECU?

Setup is 90 Harness with V3 and Evo 8 maf

I like to see projects like this. But I disagree on leaving the volve engine in. The 2.3 4g63 is like from another planet. its that good.

I wouldnt keep turning the engine over. unbolt the cas from head and spin it by hand. when you have fuel and saprk then plug it back in.

OK, so with a clear'er head this morning and reading what you posted. I can leave the CAS out and spin with a drill to test for spark and fuel. Its a PITA to install the CAS in my car.

Can I gound out the PTU to create spark, similiar to testing an MSD box?

Found the problem. When I was installing the Harnness, and how I have it tucked down under the intake. I forgot to drill out a 1/4 inch grounding spade to 8mm for the intake bolt. I did this in the car and the bit caught, spinning the spade and even tho I checked, I lost the ground to the Igniter unit.

I have spark, and injectors now.

But now I have a mechanical issue holding my valves open. Only have compression on one cylinder.

So back to the work shop.

HOLY HELL this thing is going to have alot of power once the boost gets turned up. Its venting at 7psi right now, gets there quick and the tip in tourque is ear to ear grin. Its going to be a handfull once i get rockin like 20psi and more.

The tune we have in the motor is a safe one. My tuner buddy has not made it up yet so another frined and i took it out. The Datalog shows great things.

Car ran at 176* and has 40psi hot oil pressure.

Not one hitch....it was like I drove it yesterday

Got 20 miles on her.....ranging from 30-50-30 in third gear to get the rings seated. Now im changing the oil....chasing a driveline vibration and wondering why it grinds a little going into 2nd and 4th.

Ill load a datalog tomorrow

What was at fault for the bad compression?

What was at fault for the bad compression?

It ended up being 5 sticky ex lifters.....used my vice to colapse them and she fired right up.:hellyeah:

I need to buy a new laptop tomorrow so I can log on my own. Thing is just a monster. Needs a little tranny work and a new driveshaft, and today I noticed at about 1/2 throttle under boost its popping.....so I really need to get a log.

Yea, sounds like it. Do you have a wide band? I didn't notice as I just skimmed though the thread on the other site you posted. (12 pages whew!) Honestly I would stop driving it until your ready to get a good log. Theres SOME really knowledgeable helpful guys on the Link forums to help you out.

I say that because I THOUGHT I knew what I was doing on Link, but a guy on there helped educate me a little :coy:

Yea, Im running an LC1. Getting ready to feed the wire to log in Link too. All the afr's are looking good right now. Cruise in closed loop swings from 14 to 14.7 and under power (no more than 50 percent throttle) im building 7psi (wg pressure) and have 12.7 to 13.0 right now. steady. I know I can richen this up but its a fairly good tune to cruise around town in. I need to get some miles on the motor so I can make a 2 hour trip for a meet next weekend.

I headed off today to get me a new Laptop.

Rally Sport International in Portland crazy the goods..I think they offer stuff for your 850 too. There building an NA 850 road course car right now as well.
