I bought my 97 gst with all the emissions removed, evap etc whatever. No a/c, cruise control and no cat.

I registered my car a few months ago( illinois) and im expecting that i have to go soon.

How can i pass without trying to buy everything?

I know a few guys in supras that used a dummy ecu?

and from what im aware of you cant reset the ecu because they can tell.

Help anyone?

Not trying to get technical or anything but your SOL.
I cant even pass emissions with all my emissions stuff on my car.
If you can some how figure this out, you will be considered a god to me.
If its a cel then it can be easy. But if its a tailpipe test your screwed.
goodluck,
Taran

Get the 98/99 ECU, and flash it to get rid of the CEL. I have none of that crap on my car & no CEL.

Well if the car is close to stock there would be no need for a flash if it's just a scan test. The problem with pre '99 cars is the readiness checks. Just find a '99 ECU and run it for a bit to get it to set everything to ready.

I'm confused when you mean get everything set to ready?

Isnt that kind of like the same thing, if you reset your ecu and its fine for 100 miles or something like that then it picks up the codes again?

because they can tell if you reset it.

Let me clear this up a bit.

Whenever the power to the ECU is lost, the "readiness tests" as well as CEL codes are reset. The emission testers will know it was recently reset because the readiness codes are not ready. After a certain period of time with a casual driving style, the readiness checks will all be set to ready. But if say you have a test pipe, that is also when the CEL codes will start to come back for the most part.

Where it gets tricky, is with the pre 1999 turbo ECU. They have a problem setting the readiness codes to ready no matter how long you drive it. Mitsu offers a "ready" temp flash for it but it's $100+ and will reset as soon as the car is shut off. So that's just retarded. The solution is the '99 ECU. I keep a spare just for the occasion.

Does the car have DSMLink? I know many ppl here in IL that r in the same situation as you and they all run dsmlink and pass no problem.

do yourself a favor and try this first. stop in at your favorite auto parts store and see if they have a code reader that will display the readiness codes. then disconnect the battery for a minute to clear the memory, hook it back up and have them check your readiness codes. as long as your CEL doesn’t come on right away....i have been told by a guy at the emissions testing center here in Nevada that there is a known flaw in the mitsu coding that shows the readiness checks as "ready" as soon as you hook the battery.

To clear things up.

It is possible to set all of the readiness monitors and CELs to ready/off by manipulating the code within the ecu. This manipulation is really only possible with 95 eprom and 98/99 ecus that are flashable. In the case of flashable ecu the process is quite simple and requires only the ecu, a tactrix 2.0 cable, a laptop, and some reading.

I have no idea what emissions checks exist in Illinois, but if there is no tailpipe test, and especially no load test then it is possible to bypass emissions and be on your way. Moral and legal responsibilities are all yours. Only do what you can live with. I personally would never be willing to drive a car with the CEL on all the time so doing these fixes would be a matter of personal preference long before I worried about emissions. So what do you want to do? Replace all your emissions equipment for probably around $150-$200 or spend $400 to get a 98/99 ecu and the cable to flash it? One way your morally/legally in the clear and the other you get an awesome tuning system at the same time.

Yes I was talking to a guy named Paul at midwest street performance( shop i go to) and he told me with the dsmlink you can shut off sensors and do some more stuff. I was going to look into that but in the meantime get the codes checked at autozone and give it a go.

Here in illinois, in some countys you dont have to get tested, so i was thinking about transfering the address to a friend or family members house that is in that area.

Wait, so you can permanently delete a cat failure cel with the flash-able ecu's? I've got my 2.0 cable coming in a week and it would be nice to get rid of that pesky cel.

If they notice the car doesn't have the readiness codes set. They'll wipe the ecu and start fresh so they can set readiness codes. I know this for a fact because, they do inspections at my job and that's how we have to do them. I believe you have to drive 20-40mph at about 2500 rpm for about 5 miles then 40-60mph for another 5-10 miles. You can look up on Google how to set them for mitsu's. Im not sure how they work with dsmlink.

This is true but like I stated, pre '99 ECU's have problems getting into those "ready" parameters. Some cars are fine, some aren't. My '98 ECU wouldn't. So I found a '99 ECU that does.

Even more fun is that that I got it before anyone knew how to make it tunable ;)

Hows this sound, Im picking up a dsmlink, not sure if i should get the v2 or v3, i have the palm pilot with the cable and all those goodies. Does anyone know if the palm will work with the v3?

I've heard this way you can set the readiness monitors and what not.
