So i just got out of my high performance class an we were given an interesting assignment that got me really thinking an seams like fun an i thought everyone could give it a try :D

so here it is....
assume you are building a car with a budget of 12k, witch can be spent as you wish for improvements to the engine, power train, chassis, body, and interior. The type of car is your choice, the condition will be assumed to be drivable as-is, with decent body and interior. this is not a "beater". Car can be planned as a daily driver or a "weekend warrior" at the type of event of your choice (drags, track, off-road, show etc.) so answer the following questions based upon WHAT you would do an WHY you would make that choice. Try an name 3 factors for each.

SETUP: the goal for the finished car is.

1. would you use the original engine or a different one an why?

2.what work would you do to the engine block, and why?

3.what type of pistons would you use (forged, hypereutectic, cast) and why?

4.what type of rings would you use (plain, moly, gapless, etc) and why?

5.what changes or work would be done to the crank and rods and why?

6.what changes would you make to the cylinder head and why?

7.what camshaft type and specs (roller, flat, lift, duration, etc) would you use and why?

8.what other changes would you make to the valve train (lifter type, springs, pushrods, camdrive, rockers, etc) and why

9.what would be your projected RPM working range and why?

10.what type of intake manifold would you use and why?

11.what type/size carburetor or FI system would you use and why?

12.what other changes would you make to your induction system (cold air, supercharging, nitrous, etc) and why?

13.what type and size exhaust system would you use and why?

14.what type of ignition system would you use and why?

15.what type/size clutch (with m/t) or torque converter (with a/t) would you use and why?

16.what type of transmission and what modifications would you use and why?

17.what type and size of drive axle and what modifications would you use and why?

18.what type of suspension would you use and rear and why?

19.what changes would you make to shocks, springs, sway bars, brakes, etc and why?

20.would you make any changes to the body, what and why?

i haven't had time to think yet but i wanted to see what every one else thought :p
so think hard and have fun :D

I see what your getting at. Have people do your dirty work for you ha.

:p
na this just really got me thinking about what i would want to do with my car instead of just throwing money at it and not really knowing what i want to do with it

Used Evo VIII; enough said.
It will smoke anything else in the same price range and condition. It's ready for anything right out of the box.
Answer to questions 1 - 12; stock! Because it's ready right out of the box!
Your assignment is done. Now go work on your car.

With a 12k budget I think that's out of the question.

yeah the only Evo youre gonna find for $12k is gonna be a salvage titled, non running pos.

The cheapest decent Evo ive seen has been $16k. Decent being 150k mi, paint up front chipped to hell from freeway driving, and poorly upkept interior.

I would probably do something like this.
Used automatic LS1 Fbody. You can find a 98-00 for cheap these days. Probably spend around 6500. That leaves 5500 for mods.

1-6 i would leave stock because they are sufficient enough.
7-8 Comp cam package..includes lifters, pushrods, valvesprings etc. Thats around $600.
9- RPM range would be roughly 3000-6800 RPM.
10- factory manifold because its good enough
11- factory fuel injection because its also good enough
12- Cold air kit and a 150 shot nitrous kit. This should run around $800
13- Long tube headers and true dual 3" exhaust. Thats around $1000
14- factory ignition
15- Stock trans with a cooler added and a 3800 torque converter. $650
16 read (15)
17- Buy a complete new rear end. Stock 7.5" rear ends wont hold up. A moser 12 bolt with 3.73 gears is around $1800 new, includes hardened axles.
18-19. Spend the last $650 on drag shocks, drag springs, and control arms.
20= leave the body stock.

I know this doesnt include shit like gaskets and bolts and odds&ends but its just a rough thing i whipped up on the spot.

SHould be a solid low 11 high 10 second car. A cammed LS1 car with a good converter will run mid/high 11's give or take some, with drag radials.

Add 150 shot and your in the tens...

He's right, true story but I actually had a 1992 camaro z28 ( the old ugly one ) and the car went high 9s in the 1/4 on nitrous and high 10s on motor. Very possible with that budget and the car was driven on the street quite often and ran on 93 octane. LS1 camaro would be just as easy if not easier ... I sold a 2000 ls1 Z28 I had with mods for $5k.

Nice very nice. There are tons of cars out there that you can make run VERY good for under 12k...

A couple years ago before the prices went up you could pick up a 86-87 buick grand national. Upgraded turbo, intercooler, fuel system, trans, bolt on etc...you can run well into the 11's without even taking the valve covers off.

Fox body mustangs... you can spray them, turbo them, or supercharge them LOL. Most of them arent that quick but the ones done "right" run real hard.

Im new to DSM's LOL as you can tell i really only know about domestic stuff

I bought my last dsm ('93AWD 5speed) talon off a wholesale lot for $1,600 on the road. After a good detail job, it was in excellent condition other than the leaking valve stem seals that i replaced. The car had 140k on it and was in great shape. That leaves a lot of spending money. I invested a total of $6k including the car and it was a daily driven car that ran 12.0 E/T's. With another $6k to burn, that car would be sick!
