2g FWD Clutch Options

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok guys/gals im in need of help choosing a clutch kit that best fits my needs. I have been doing alot of research these past few months over which particular clutch kit I should purchase here on tuners but I have found mostly advice threads on cars with/over 350-400WHP and moslty AWD 1g 6-bolt models. My car is a 96 GST with a 7-bolt with minor modifications (listed below) and I use it probably 2-3 days out of the week just to cruise around maybe an little racing action once a month it all depends. Mostly a daily driver in a way. My goal is 300WHP when I get it tuned but alot of people been telling me my dreams are kinda too high and at most I will get 250WHP at most since we are at a pretty high altitude here (Colorado). Im gonna try my hardest to get near 300WHP at no more than 20psi (22 psi if im really close haha). I have narrowed it down to the clutches listed below due to my whp dream goal. Keep in mind durability/reliability and best performance is what I am looking for. If any fellow tuner out there has delt or has had any problems with these clutches post it up ###!!! I will be replacing my TOB with an OEM TOB, clutch fork, pivot ball, and the slave cylinder regardless of the clutch kit.

Modifications-
3" Tsudo Turbo-back ("Cat Eliminator"),
Bomz Speed Air Intake,
SS Autochrome Ported O2 Housing (Super Atmospheric Dump Pipe),
HKS SSQV (Black Edition),
Walbro 190lph (Rewired),
2.5" Aluminum Piping,
28x12x2.5 FMIC (Tube And Fin),
MHI Big 16g,
Ported 2g Cast Manifold,
RRE Upper Intercooler + Additional Piping,
560cc Evo 9 Injectors (Pink Tops)
Apexi SAFC Neo
AEM Wide Band
RRE Lightened Flywheel
I have been up to date on my maintainance from engine to suspension. It has 124,XXX miles.

Clutch kits suited for my goal-
ACT HD2100 with street disc (I have heard endless complaints about these)
Centerforce non dualfriction
Clutchmasters FX100, FX200
Fidanza 2.1 carbon kevlar, 3.2 kevlar
Spec stage 1

If there is any questions about anything, comments, critisism on my ride, suggestions on how I did something wrong, corrections on my grammer I dont care please feel free to post I need advice thank you!!!!!

Act 2100 never did my GST wrong, just posted about it in another thread.

An not that pricey!

But if you plan to go bigger down the line 2600 wouldn't hurt. Just dont go 2900 way to heavy and you can get a quartermaster twin disk for the price and way lighter / better

the act clutch disk is what goes wrong -- the pressure plate is awesome and has a great rep

im looking at about 280 to 300 tops for my all wheel drive ( so im kinda in the same ball park as you )and im puttting an

act2100 PP
clutchmasters or centerforce disk
oem TOB

doing it this summer and ive, like you, done tons of research

look into the other clutch disks -- they have a different spring design so there a lot harder to break

in all honesty you will probably get away with a stock mitsubishi disk as long as your not planning on beating the hell out of it

Well, see I was on a thread Ludacris posted couple years back and it was a poll thread asking "how many people have had ACT clutch kits fail on them within a certain period" and alot of DSMers have had alot of problems with this kit. Some, like you, said the ACT disc springs pop out and some others said the pressure plate spring fingers break off and ruin flywheels and such. Some others have said their ACT kit is perfect and never had problems. I mean ACT was the kit I was gonna buy until I saw that thread. Thanks for the feedback I will take that into consideration (ACT PP 2100 w/ different clutch disc).

well i just got my act 2600 i got it because although i am 300whp it wouldnt kill to get a clutch that holds more, you never know when you decide to up the psi... plus its not that much more than the 2100. do not get oem's man, or these rip off ebay clutched i got a stage 3 f1 clutch and they complete suck!. going cheap always costs more

Indeed like i said above never hurts to go alittle bigger ( like injectors ) ect cause you never know when you want to aim for more power.

As for the ACT clutches. Its the fact that alot of DSM'ers use them. So the more there are out there, the more you will see people complain about them because there's just more out there and the product good/bad ration doesn't change. Just you hear about it more often. I myself never had an issue.

2600 is a safe bet though, just make sure everything is done right when its installed. Bleed the system ect.

Theres always a risk with anything you get a defective one.

From my experience, the spec pp is too light and doesn't have enough clamping force. I have a spec stage 3 and it slips horribly.

I have a 2100 + street disc with a fidanza aluminum flywheel and its great.

Currently I'm running a comp clutch stage 1 in my car it lasted 3 years of DD and mild abuse. But I just picked up a fidanza flywheel and a ACT2600 hd kit w/6puck disk. I'm just waiting to see how this is going to work out..:hellyeah:

Thanks for the feed back guys and yea there is definatly more ACT products out there than the others.. I think I am gonna try the clutchmasters fx200 tho.. I like the set up and the specs seem to be perfect plus the disc is kevlar material.. Im just going to try something new and post up how it holds with my set up.. I hope it works out and you never know unless you try it so wish me luck!!

Indeed good luck and let us know how it turns out. Id like to see how grippy it is and how it holds up under power and if it slips at all.

I myself when i upgrade am going with a quartermaster twin disk setup so ya.

Let me throw one more suggestion at you. Check out TMZPerformance.com. Tim is a great guy and will answer all of your questions in a very timely manner. I'm using the Southbend Clutch TZ-series disk with their SS pressure plate and have nothing but great things to say about this clutch.

It's reported to hold up to 500 ft-lb torque and easily handles my AWD's 330 ft-lb without slipping one bit. The disk is full-face Kevlar and offers exceptional driveability with absolutely no chattering and the 2100# pressure plate makes SoCal stop and go traffic a breeze. The disk also has only 2 springs and 4 rubber dampers which lessens the number of springs likely to wear out, break or pop out of its retainer. Another thing I like about the SBC clutch is the Kevlar friction surface is thicker than the Fidanza 3.2 it replaced (due to one spring breaking and the other 5 popping out @ only 13k miles with no launches).

You shoulda told me this about 2 hours before you posted ha ha.. I just ordered the fx200 from MAP performance.. Im glad I didnt go with the fidanza 3.2 then because it was either that or the fx200.. I will contact Tim anyways and ask him what he thinks about my set-up and maybe save me time and headache.. Thanks
