So I finished my 6 bolt swap but I installed the wrong flywheel so the starter will not engage it, so my question is is it safe to try to push start it with the AWD flywheel in it? I just want to make sure I got everything else hooked up right.

i wouldn't waste your time or effort trying to do that... just pull it back out and put the right flywheel in. then see how it starts.

X2. Why risk the damage? You will have to replace it with the right part anyway.

Yes you can push start it. But in the end you will have to switch out the flywheels. So you might as well go ahead and do that now.

Yeah I guess I will just wait I was just going to try to get it started to bring it to this shop where I can use a lift because it seems like it's going to be a pain to pull the tranny in my driveway.

i don't think it would mess anything up doing that just to get it to the shop...

yeah, try not to stall it on the way over there. it's always fun trying to push start a car by yourself...

What flywheel did you accidently install?

He put in the AWD flywheel. He needed to use the FWD flywheel. They are different diameters. AWD is smaller due to needing to clear the output shaft going to the transfer case.

I know that but wouldnt it be easier to just get an AWD starter? When i helped convert my buddies GST to a GSX all we did was swap flywheels and got a GSX starter. I might be mistaken but wouldnt that be easier than dropping the trans?

Can I just switch starters??

I just researched it and it turns out the starters are the same

Maybe i was thinking of the difference between the A/T and M/T starters, idk...

If they are the same starters but have different flywheels, are the AWD and FWD trans bellhousings spaced differently for the starter mounting?

Either way i guess you are going to have to drop the trans again to swap flywheels.

The flywheels are different from fwd and awd. AWD is smaller diameter, FWD is larger diameter. The starters are the same. The starter plates are also different between fwd and awd. ZING!

Just swap out the flywheels and get it over with.

I know its just damn frustrating after putting the engine in and realizing I put the wrong flywheel in. I have never taken a transmission out but I figure if I can swap engines I should be able to take a tranny out.

You can pop start it to get to the shop but as already said, don't stall it as you won't be able to start it again unless you can do another pop start.

Best to just replace it before trying.
