looking at short shifters for my 1GB.....apparently i don't have alot to choose from...i guess because of it being so old most companies don't make them for the 1G's any more...

anyways i have come across 3 so far....Fidanza..Ralco...and JNZ makes one for the 1G's

Short Shifters for the Mitsubishi 1G Eclipse-Talon from HorsepowerFreaks

JNZ Tuning Short Shifter (1G DSM and GVR4) : JNZ Tuning

just wanted to know if anyone was running any of them and what they thought of them...

i'm kind of leaning towards the JNZ shifter...but i'm kind of hesitant because of price ($145) but that price includes need parts for install and bushings...

if anyone knows of any other possibilities please feel free to suggest.....but don't tell me just to cut the stock shifter.....I actually want shorter throws and not just a shorter height...so cutting the stock shifter won't help with that.

thanks

I've tried the Neuspeed 2g short shifter, similar in design what JNZ offers. I didn't care much for a shifter shorter than a stock 2g. I think most guys go for the heavy 2g stock replacement shift knob and toss it on their 1g and call it a day. I personally had a hell of a time shifting fast with a short shifter. Yes shifts are shorter, but they take forever since you have so much less leverage to get the gear in. It was on the car for a week and I yanked it off. I threw mine in a box and forgot about it, that was +12 years ago.

Another option is to possibly look into getting a Razo shift knob instead. Reason being is that I was looking into the short shifter option for my 1GA but after putting on the knob it dropped the height dramatically to a perfect blend of shift height IMHO. below is a pic of it. That flashlight is 3" high. Just something to ponder possibly.

well i'm doing the short shifter, under hood bushings, and probably the symborski shifter kit bushings

i'm not looking to replace the short shifter in order to "shift faster" i'm just more comfortable driving with short shifters as apposed to stock shifters...i guess because it makes the throws closer....so ## not moving the shifter around as much

thanks for the suggestion....i'll keep it in mind....but like i said i'm looking for shorter throws as well as shorter height and replacing the knob really doesn't help with the throws

Yes, I think I understand what your saying. There are tradeoffs to going shorter. In fact, the performance I feel is worse on a 2g, it only "looks" better. I think the 2g stock shifter height is close to ideal, which is still alot shorter than a 1g. Beyond that, shifting becomes real tricky.

short shifters are ###. iv had them on mustangs and 1g's and my buddy had one on his 6 speed ls1 car and they suck all you do is tear up transmissions with them. keep this in mind the hand is always faster than the foot. i learned that the hard way. i will never ever ever own another one much less drive one. just my 2 cents.

There is 3 kinds of shifters.

OEM
Short
Short Throw

Short throw is the one that actually reduces your throw. I had a B&M Short Throw that came with my car and I hated it. It made finding gears a ####ing pain in the ass. I missed 2nd 3rd and 4th with it. I cant tell how many times I down shifted from 3rd to 2nd instead of going into 4th. It just felt sloppy compaired to the OEM unit that I know have.

Bingo. I couldn't shift worth a damn with my notchy built transmission and a short shifter. I ground the gears so many times with this mod it was sickening.
The thought of having to shift gears fast during a race gave me anxiety attacks:D

Do the Symborski shifter mod, and the shifter cable/tranny side bushing or steel bearing upgrade, and a 2g heavy shift knob and you'll have the best shifting possible.

Shorter "throw" shifters " lengthen the cable side shifter lever arm, reducing throw "angle" but increasing the cable/tranny side moment, or basically increasing the resistance force in the gear lever.

Physically "shorter" shifters shorten the shift lever. The throw angle stays the same but because its "shorter", your hand moves a shorter distance. Little bit different technique but in the end the force needed to shift gears also goes up.

Or shifters like B&M do a combo of both techniques. Either way, there is a tradeoff in shift force effort vs. shorter throw.

i'll try out the symborski and under hood bushings 1st and see how it feels and i guess go from there

is it something with the trannies in the 1 g's and 2 g's that cause this issue.....only ask is because my car before this one (Mazda Protege 5) had short shifter and i never had one problem with it shifting and finding the gears or grinding....

hell all the people i knew that had Protege's swapped for either a B&M short shifter or a TWM short shifter...

Depends on the tranny, but typically the DSM trannies can be notchy at times.

To test out whether you can live with a shorter shifter, just shift the car at the base of the shift lever. If you start missing gears, then you'll know for certain.

i just drove a 2g with a short throw in it, and i loved it. shifted very nice, but the trans had a stock rebuild and stuff. it's person opinion and choice.

I have the B&M in my car and love it. I have no problems hitting gears up or down. I guess it's all in your technique and personal preference.

I say you want a short throw not short shifter ! Take a B&M copy on ebay for cheap and you wont regret it ! Take some under shifter bushing and install them at the same time. ;)

a short throw is what i've been talking about all along....read my 1st post....

2 things on ## comment though

1. i would not by a knockoff anything from ebay ever....just my prefrence on the matter.....

2. b&m only have shifters in stock for the 95-99 eclipses....there is no 1g love...

the 3 i listed are the only 3 i have found so far for the 1G....if you know of other please feel free to list

if i had my choice i would get a TWM short throw...but they only have stock for 00-05 Eclipses...no love for the 1g or the 2g with those guys

For 2g's B&M no doubt takes the cake for short shifters....I have mine set at 50% reduction....

But to the OP
The JNZ Shortened short shifter which uses a galant stalk cut down even more so than the standard 1g shaft.....Plus where the cables connect are at a lower spot on the shaft rather than higher IIRC...ALSO they have the factory bumpstops bult into the shifter so you will not overextend you shift forks and break them....90% of aftermarket short shifters do not include bumpstops....
My B&M does not have bumpstops...and it is authentic....the cables are what limit my throw....

I absolutely prefer JNZ's shortened short shifter....Couple that with the symborski shift kit...Speedsource brass underhood shifter bushings (Dont do the crappy ass skateboard bearing junk....), and if I'm not mistaken Shepracing makes aluminum cable stiffners...EDIT found it scroll down and youll find it DSM AWD Driveline Products ...also make sure your clutch pedal assembly doesnt have too much free play....

Youll have a quick shifting, and very precise dsm...As long as your tranny is up to it

Hope this helps

Jim

precisly the type of response i was looking for and hoping for....details go along way with me more than opinions....really appreciate this response

i was curious though to one comment in ## response.....why do you say not to go with the skateboard bearings like some many others have done with proven results?

No problem, the reason why I dont like the skateboard crappy shitty bearing mod is..
1: Killed a set of cables tryin to get the bearings in....I got pissed.....:banghead: Kinda hard to fit a vise under a hood with everything installed...
2: Broke the welds holding the bearings together....:notgood:
3: Went in a little crooked...pita to get back perfectly straight...
4: IF you ever need to swap cables out...dont expect to get your bearings out...your better off buying a new set....(the brass ones slide out nicely...)
5: Just a total pita to install. Took me about an hour to fully get the brearings in just perfectly...on my 2g it took longer to get the stock rubbers out than to install the brass shifter bushings ROFL

Jim

i guess i'll just spend an extra $10-$15 to avoid that problem and get the brass bushings

thanks again for the heads up, and the good opinion/comment

anyone else?
