I am about to take a plunge and buy an AWD talon for four hundred dollars. It needs some new body parts but have all of them for about $200. I have some questions for you. I did a VIN check for it. I live in Canada. The car has not been driven or registered for two years. The ignition in the car has been drilled out. Some idiot thought it would be cool to do that apparently. The person who did this said they were trying to diagnoise something. But to me it just made another problem. I am sure that after I replace the ignition there will be some other things wrong.
What do you guys suggest?
This is the list I have so far:
Flush and replace lines. (Coolant,Oil, Brake Fluid)
New Battery
Alternator
Ignition
Spark Plugs/Wires
Starter
Timing Belt
Engine Rebuild/Swap (I am guessing that most seals have gone bad in two years)
Can you guys think of anything else? Please give me your advice. I want an AWD. This is the only one that I can find for a reasonable deal. All the other ones I feel like they are asking for my first born. Any advice and or tips would be appreaciated.
Plus I have a GM MAF with and DSM translator.
I love my current car 92 TSI FWD. But I just want an AWD.
Thanks for all of your advice. James

The ignition was drilled out? Was it stolen LOL? If you do plan on getting it, $400 is cheap. You could throw a new used motor in it and still only be in $1000.

No, it wasn't stolen. Well there is no police records. So if it was stolen the previous owner didn't care. Which is beyond my understanding. From what I understand this person who was trying to start the car. His key got stuck and wouldn't turn. (which is typically due to old or low oil) So he drilled a hole in his ignition out of frustration. The car has not been in an accident or anything. Here is the link to the report I got.
CarProof Verified Report #2175097 for Vehicle VIN
The person who owns it now should NOT own a DSM. He needs to care about his car. Not do shit like drilling a hole into his ignition. It kinda pisses me off actually. Maybe for that reason I will buy it. But it depends on somethings.
Is there anything that you could think to replace besides what I have mention. There would be nothing worse than me getting all of my homework done and having the car back together and forgetting to replace like a rear main engine seal. (did that with a previous tranny job) I dont want to rip my car apart twice. If I dont have to. If that makes sense.
I am just trying to figure out how much its going to cost me. That is all. My buddy wants to learn the ways of DSM. And I want an AWD. Seems like a perfect oppertunity for both.

Its been sitting for two years? Be ready to replace all the calipers/brake pads, ball joints, tie rod ends(maybe). I dont know what else was beaten out of it but i would just be ready to replace the shocks as well.

Another reason why I started this thread. Do you think that its worth it? Or do you think its just a pit fall for alot of money?

Yeah, I am pretty sure that he beat a window too. But you never know. I dont know if its been sitting for two years. But looking at that report it sure appears to be sitting for a while. I know for sure at least a year.

well i got my 91 tsi for 1000 so far ive put 2200 in it LOL ya im dumb.but to me its welllll worth it she's my baby ive had sooooooo many problems wit it now i gota tear apart the motor AGAIN n put new pistons n rings in it ugh but if u r really searous about it then go for it u aint loosen nothen it will all b worth it in the end and u could prob get more out of it when u go to sell it. but the fact the ignition's been drilled LOL it was prob stolen at sum point n time n they knocked the window out to get in..

I will humor you with that. What kind of terrible owner does not report a theft or attempted theft on their car. Like really? I dont get it. I am not trying to make money off this. But I dont want to spend like 25K on the car and get like 3K for it. If you know what I mean. The fact that it has been totally rebuilt would probably be a plus to most people. I am sad to say that my first love will have to go once this one is done. Why the hell couldn't it be AWD. Any parts that you can think of to be replaced?

For $400 for a full car isn't bad at all. If it really comes down to it, you can buy it as a parts car and turn your TSi into an AWD with the available parts to swap in.

I dont' understand the drilled out ignition as a broken key can be taken out by a locksmith and not to mention it'll have more problems with that long of a sit. Maybe you'll get lucky and everything electircally will be fine and everything else is in usable condition except the parts you would need to replace after a hibernation that long.

Was it sitting outside for the 2 years in the elements or was it covered or even better in a garage?

I would get it for parts alone as you could get more than $400 selling stuff out of it.

I know that for the past year it has braved the elements. I know that I can convert my TSI to an AWD. But how easy is that. I have no welding experience and nothing like that. Let alone I dont have access to those tools. And paying a mechanic to do it seems a little silly. I am almost positive it would cost close to 2 grand if I am lucky. You wouldn't do a rebuild on it? How do I diagnoise using the ECU? Is that possible in this year? Or would I have to replace the ECU?
