Hey guys, I'm not sure if I'm posting my question in the right section of the forums or not. I'm stuck & need help deciding on what to do with 2 cars that I have the option of buying. I'm looking for an all wheel drive turbo car I can toy around with & have fun with in the winter. I'm not looking to make money off of this, this is strictly for pleasure. My goal is just 250-300 horsepower.

#1 - 1992 Eclipse Gsx (110k on the body & transmission), comes with the stock original transmission but no motor. No rust or rot whatsoever. He would sell me the shell for $500-600.

#2 - 1992 Eclipse Gsx (114k on the body, engine, & transmission), complete car, just needs a new exhaust manifold, turbo, & new tires. No rust or rot either. Price is $1,500

All help & opinons are greatly appreciated. :thumb:

I'd go with #2 as you would need a complete longblock from the way it sounds for option #1 which would end up costing more money than option #2

Just be sure to do a compression test on the #2 engine.

if you can put in a engine yourself and you can find one cheap. do #1
if you are going to pay someone too put the engine in do #2 or I would buy both if you have the space just my 2 cents

I don't know how to build or install an engine. I can do the easy stuff like turbo swap, manifold, injectors, etc. How much would a shop charge to just install an engine? My brother in law could build me an engine. Plus, I don't know how to check the engine compression on that one car.

the compression test u need a compression tool, about 50 bucks.search on this site on how too do it. it is easy thou. a engine is going to cost 800-1000 maybe around about and they will charge a good 400 maybe less because the old engine is out. Now that I know you don't know how too do it I would go with option 2.

Okay, just an update here. I decided not to go with the car thats already complete. The guy said there was dent on the roof & the rear bumper was "wavy" from a prior accident.. whatever that means. I'm also looking at a 99 gsx automatic. It has 120k, fully loaded, red, body is in great condition, he wants 3k. The kicker is, he said the engine has a tap in it. What are your thoughts?

Depends on if it is lifter tap or say rod knock. Get some audo clips of it and then we can diagnose it better unless you are very descriptive.

If you can deal with a potential rebuild, that sounds like a great price for a 99 assuming it has a black interior. Manual swap isn't too hard to do either if you want to go that route as well.

Yes it is black leather interior. I just saw a picture of it. The gentlemen said he wasn't sure of the problem exactly & they're about 2 hours south of me.

that complete car with the dent in the roof mite be able too come out if there is no dent. you could take the headliner out and push on the roof. if it is not too bad. and the bumper is a easy fix. better then paying for engine work on the other cars when you don't even know what it is.

why was your acount activated in jan of 2003 and your not sure if this is in the right section?
7 years on this site and you can't install an engine, and pass on a car because of a dent and bumper damage?
something sounds fishy...

Yeah true, thanks for the good advice Deer. As for the comment above.. back in 2003 I owned a 94 tsi awd then I sold it because it needed too much work. And at that time, college, part-time job, it just didn't seem logical to keep it. Years later, have the time, job, money, & a '08 daily driver. Looking for a dsm to toy with with :hellyeah:

Yeah dude, it's my universal password. A completely made up word
