Well my head gasket blew the other day and i decided to tackle the job myself because I don't have the money to let a shop do it and after research i realized it really isn't that bad to perform. I just got the head off and it definitely is a tedious process but not that bad if you take your time. Could you guys look over the pictures and see if anything looks bad to you.
Cylinder walls 4 and 1 feel smooth except at the very top its a dark ring. Is that anything to worry about ?

the rings at the top are normal. the piston rings don't make it all the way up the cylinder. i would definitely get the head cleaned, the valves checked to see if they seal completely, and the surface flatness of where the head mates to the block checked and milled appropriately. that's a nice head gasket BTW.

Yea like above I would get the head skimmed. I would also get a head gasket kit including new valve stem seals. A water pump, timing belt kit, and new head bolts.

Sorry if this is already in your plans but I thought I would mention it.

timing, accessory belts and pump were changed less than 10k ago. I'm definitely glad of that it will save me some money for this head rebuild.

yea go ahead and get it surfaced valves faced and seats reground and valves lapped back in and have your springs checked to make sure there still in spec and new valve stem seals and cam seals. thats should be it. i do everything myself except for surfacing the head as i dont have a machine for that LOL.

to me it looks like the valves have been replaced at some poit, the divits in the valve heads lead me to that.

the head needs to be checked for flat....

as above I would have a valve job done....
seats cut and valves cut...
(some of this will apply, not the guide work unless the giudes are wore)

you may want to ask to have the valves back cut...
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/341288-why-have-your-valves-back-cut.html

and have the springs checked..
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/341287-how-test-valve-springs.html

use the SBI info... if the springs do not meet spec, replace, the BC1100 are a decent replacement spring and will work with your OE retainers.

you may want to do this oil port mod...
