You can run the v3 program.. You must upgrade to take advantage of what v3 has to offer..Everyone should be using the v3 program and just pick which version you have. It is easier to show other your logs..
 
Which cable? Which part of the cable?

On a 2G DSMLink uses the OBD2 connector above the driver right knee to connect with the car.
The shape of the OBD2 connector is standardized and the same on all 2Gs.
 
If you have v2, you will have 2 parts to the cable. The first is the OBDII to serial adapter.

Then from there, a serial cable will screw into the right side (in the above image).

If you have v3, you have a one piece cable that has an OBDII plug on one end and a USB plug on the other.

I just wanted to say I just bought dsm link used. Ecu with dsmlink chip and all of the cables. Everything except it didn't have a usb cord. Not a big deal as long as you have the serial port there is an adapter you can buy anywhere because ecm link basically said your sol. Your not so I hope this helps I thought I wasted $450

I just wanted to say I just bought dsm link used ecu dsmlink all the cables everything except it didn't have a usb cord.

Only V3 DSMLink would come with a USB cable.
 
What I'm saying is I have 2.5. Ecm link will not let you buy anything from them unless you upgrade. This is a simple soluution for cheap instead up grading.

I understand what your trying to say but again you seem to be having problems spitting it out.

If you buy a 2G DSMLink V2 used and don't get the OBD2 serial adapter you got hosed because it's the hardware key and proof that you really have DSMLink. The EPROM and software can be counterfeit easily. counterfeitcopies [ECMTuning - wiki] ECMTuning isn't going to sell you a new hardware key since you don't really own DSMLink and that's what your getting at.

If you get a real DSMLink OBD2 serial adapter but somehow the DB9 serial cable is missing it's not big deal, it's a standard part at any good computer store.

Expecting a USB DSMLink cable to come with is a mistake since the 2G V2 didn't come with a OBD2 USB cable.

While your point might be on topic, I'm still waiting to here what shadoof77 is trying to find out.
 
Does the link cable rectangle or more trapazoid? Cause my friend tried using his from his 97 gsx which is trapazoid shape and my on my 99 gsx is a rectangle. Aren't they all supposed to be the same?


All 2g DSMLink cables connect to the OBD II connector in the car.

The shape, location, and pin outs of this connector are governed by federal regulations.

Some 2g's have two connectors adjacent to each other.

The black one closest to the firewall is the OBD II connector.
 
Wouldnt any OBDII scan cable be able to work in place of the OBDII->serial->usb cable combo to communicate with ECM link? In reality the cable is nothing more than this?

On DSMLink V2 on a 2G the OBD II adapter is also a custom key so you can't use a generic OBD II cable. That's what we've been discussing here.

On the V3 products there is hardware that goes into the EPROM socket and it's the key so cables like the openport 1.3 cable seem to work but others based on other chipsets like the ELM chips might not. The impression I've gotten is that the client side software has to know a bit about the adapter to do things like initialization correctly.
 
There isn't really a V2.5, there is DSMLink V2 and the latest version of v2 client software is v2.5.2.27
You can also use the V3 client but only the v2 feature set is functional with the V2 chip.
