hey guys! i blew the motor in my 98 gst about 5 months ago i finally found a used one from a guy on this site. Ive got the motor now and i just noticed a difference between the motors my 98 gst has like a triangle box on the left top side of the valve cover but the motor i have doesnt its just like a black circle plug? am i gonna run into problems

Sounds like the one you got was from an earlier year. The part you are talking about is the cam sensor. You should be able to swap the cam sensor over from the blown motor to the new one and be fine. That should be the only difference from the 98 motor to the new one.

the new motor is like this

cool man thanks guys :thumb:

if you look at the 95 motor you can see that theres no threaded hole for the cas on the bottom corner. what do i have to do leave the bolt out?

You can still use it, you just need to switch over the Cam angle sensor components(triangle shaped box) over from your old 98 Motor to the new motor
The '95-'96 intake cam is probably not threaded to accept the '97-'99 Cam Angle Sensor.

You'll need to swap the intake cam and cam angle sensor from the blown engine into the replacement engine for this to work properly.

You could also do a little rewiring to allow the replacement engine's cam angle sensor (which reads from the intake cam gear) to work, but honestly it will be easier to just swap the cam and the sensor over to the new engine.

All of the mounting holes should be the same between the two heads.

That sure is a small intake manifold on the new engine as well- any idea what it's out of? I'm guessing something like a Mitsu RVR.

Just out of curiosity- what is the 10-digit Mitsu part number on the compressor cover of the turbo on the new engine? Should be something like 49178-05200 or similar.

The motor he just got should go in no problem unless somebody hacked the wiring to install the 95-96 motor....check to see if there is a 3 wired black plug near the pcv valve... if so your golden...

EDIT
Just noticed you have a blown 97+ motor and bought a 95-96 motor....
Your going to need to follow justmx post...

OR

worse comes worse...just do what I did....

Buy a 1g CAS, buy a 6 bolt swap harness.... pull plug off 95-96 head on intake cam, put 1g CAS on and Plug plugs in and tap 1 wire....Voila...

You wont have to pull motor apart besides pulling the valve cover... and should take no longer than 30 minutes...

That's for using the '90-'94 CAS on a '95-'99 car, not necessarily for switching between the '95-'96 and '97-'99 cam angle sensors.

Your options are:
  • Change your wiring to use the '95-'96 sensor (which reads from the back of the cam gear) on your car. This is virtually free.
  • Swap the intake cam and CAS from your old motor to the new motor. This is also a free mod.
  • Find a 1G CAS and buy / make the adapter to fit your wiring. This would require purchasing a 1G CAS and possibly the harness, however the 1G CAS is slotted so it does give you tunability of your base timing.

the thing is that if i change the intake cam and the cas theres no threaded hole for the cas on the 95 motor. so what do i do leave the bolt out? that sounds like the easiest thing to do

That's for using the '91-'94 CAS on a '95-'99 car, not necessarily for switching between the '95-'96 and '97-'99 cam angle sensors.

Technically the easiest thing to do would be to buy the 6 bolt swap harness..and put a 91-94 cas on your car...

Not sure how comfortable you are with ripping motors apart or doing timing...
but in the list justmx gave
1. I dont like dicking with wiring thus why I put the 6 bolt swap harness on instead of making my own...and you dont hack your wiring then...everything is plug and play for 95-96 model cars...for 97+ you just need to tap 1 wire which is easy....
2. yeah you can swap old cam into new head, but if hes not comfortable ripping the motor apart well thats a no-no.
3...1g cas's can be had cheap 15-20 if you look hard enough....can connect straight to your 95-96 cam gear...no ripping apart motor necessary

well tommorow is my day off so ill take a look at it. so im taking the cas and the cam out of the old motor right? I can leave the cam gear on? and just putting it back in the new motor right
if this is to dangerous for me to do can someone let me know where to get a 1g cas and the harness

Ok i took a look at it and i dont really feel comfortable taking the cam out so what harness do i have to buy to make this motor work in my car i noticed the sensor on the 95 motor behind the cam gears. if you guys can give me a link to it id appreciate it

how do you loosen the timing belt?

So this is all i need? i think i get it now the one end with the 2 plugs goes behind the cam gears? and the other end with the one plug goes into the 2g engine harness?

Yeah thats all you need....Technically that is for a 95-96 car which is complete plug and play...97+has 2 plugs and 1 wire....1 plug for the stock crank sensor, 1plug for the 1g CAS, and 1 wire to tap into the factory cas wire...

Its really easy and you really cant mess it up...

so pretty much i get the harness when i put it in one plug goes into the factory harness, one goes to the plug where the 98-99 cas goes, then the last wire goes to were the the cas is on the 95 engine right? i just ordered the harness

sorry for bring back a old post but i just wanna say thank you to the guys that replied to this thread i just got the motor in and it runs great i went the advice yall gave me and just swapped the cams out and everything ending up good i love this site :hellyeah:
