Garrett & Holset Turbo Users - Your Oil Drain May Be Too Small!

I have had oil in the pan with no leaks. I used arp thread sealer between the threads and nut. I should be installing the head and turbo soon. I'll post pics then. I've installed it once before without any kinking or problems.

Are you using the plastic seal that comes with the bulkhead fittings?
 
they are teflon. They will take the heat. There shouldn't be any pressure in my oil pan. My vc has 10an fittings on it to relieve any pressure.
 
Well there are people running the -10 an lines and no problems. I was on a cummins site and most people run -12. One person was running a -16 and im not going to run that big of a drain even the people on the cummins forum thought it was a little too big LOL.
 
I had a -10AN line (with a slight kink) on my BP 57 trim and BW 256 and they both smoked. I replace that line with a un-kinked -12AN and the smoke stopped. I would definitely recommend running a -12AN and more importantly, make sure there are no kinks or sharp bends.

There's crankcase pressure. Most people's crankcase evacuation set-ups aren't good enough to keep crankcase pressure below a positive amount under boost. Only time will tell if your engine's crankcase pressures are or are not enough to compromise that seal.

I just picked up a gm emission air pump from a 2005 envoy with the 4.2 liter for the purpose of making it a crankcase evac pump. i'll have it set up by spring. FYI these pumps are a dime a dozenin the junk yard. as far as getting them brand new the dealership wanted $320 for it.
 
I couldnt find the post but was it the 1g or 2g factory oil drain line that is a good option to make your own Holset drain by modifying the tube?

This is how mine is coming so far. I had a -12 fitting welded to my pan and I opened up the hole on the inside of the pan to match. I picked up one of those 3/4 NPT flanges and will run -12 straight from the turbo. I bought a couple feet of 3/4" silicone heater hose off ebay to join the two -12 hose ends. I also trimmed the front motor mount while it was out so that bi*** shouldn't cause any grief. Once my BEP housing arrives I'll be able to finish mocking up the return line and I'll get some more pictures.

A few questions, when you bought the -12 weld on fitting for the oil pan, Im assuming you bought the steel bung over the aluminum one so it can be welded to the pan? or does it matter?

Also, what degree fittings did you use on the turbo side and oil pan side? They look to be both 45*?

*edit* just noticed that you didnt use a weld on fitting for the oil pan side.
 
So has anybody stepped up and offer a holset oil return kit yet?

Or what's the proper way of doing this.
 
Unfortunately nobody has stepped up production aside from the few pioneers you see in this thread.

Apparently the concept of "more oil entering the turbo requiring a larger-than-stock drain" just baffles the companies which design and distribute the aftermarket oil drains for our cars.
 
The oil pressure in the 95 cummins diesel that i drive with a holset hx35 turbo on it never goes above 40-45 PSI. IDK what the return line size is on the turbo. Its a bi*** to get the hood open on it for me to check. LOL. I do know that these turbos are VERY reliable on the diesel trucks. The one i drive has 210k with the original turbo and oil changes arent exactly a priority on the list......... However im going to go to the junk yard this weekend and see if they have one on one of the truck out there. If they have the hx35 its mine for 60 bucks! I can subscribe to this thread and get the return line size if you guys want me to. Thats only if they have the turbo of coarse.
 
Holy crap thats a huge difference. Ill think about this a little more when i get the turbo. There has to be a simple way of doing this. I wouldnt trust a fitting with heater hose because of the tendency to deteriorate when saturated with oil. I know when i custom fit my drain line for my galant i couldnt find oil line with that big of an ID for a stock 2g drain. Fortunately that honeycomb looking thing is flexable and i made it work that way.
