just picked up my first dsm today a 95 gsx 5 speed and i have a few ?'s about power limits before i start my build

stock short block how much hp before i have to do a rebuild or go to a 6-bolt block

stock head whats this good for before i need to port or go to an aftermarket head

stock 5-speed how far can i push this

t- case(or center diff whatever dsm guys call it), and diff's

my hp goals are 450-500 whp
and just to let you know i don't need the once over about money/time/mechanic ability etc... need for this build i am not afraid of getting in to my car

id worry about tunning and your fuel system first. without that stuff you goin to blow it up anyway.

look dude i am not looking at doing this one at a time kind of build i am more of the do every thing right the first time all at once kinda guy much like my last build may God have mercy on her soul
i know what it takes to make big power but with this being my first dsm just thought id try to find the week link before i broke something i hate when i do that

for your power goals your goin to have to build a motor. good set of cams and valve springs etc. new fuel system. some type of tunning like dsm link. fmic. a turbo matched to your power goals. manifold, exhuast. the tranny really depends on your drivving style. their is really alot of options on what you can use to build the car. id suggest researching some cars that have the same power level your shoting for and see what they are running.

i figured as much i always use aem if i can and gt30 or gt35 as i have always had good luck with them the one exception would the ihi i ran on my wrx i guess i should rephrase my question so i will

what stock parts will brake at 400-500 whp

aem is alot more expensive than link and link can do everything you are goin to need. its mainly the rods that go at that power level, but every motor is deferent. thats a pretty expensive turbo, there are alot of other option for your power level. but thats up you how much your willing to spend on everything. plus you said you like them so....

I would go hx35 and dsmlink. You can get hx35 turbos off the cummins forums for $250 shipped. Just as good if not better than any gt35 turbo. DSMLink is more user friendly and cheaper than AEM unless your really experienced at using it. Yes, as every stated earlier that much power is going to need a build.

I HAVE USED AEM.......A LOT, i would rather spend the money then learn a new program but this has very little about what brakes at any power level

I don't see why you would keep stock parts in your car with that kind of power. I mean i heard of misc stuff holding up but my goal is the same 450-500 but i feel that stock parts arent exactly meant to be pushed to far. I'd would only go so far with stock parts but thats just me.

that's what i am trying to find out.....what will the stock block hold,at what point does the head need to be ported or replaced, stock crank is good for what do i need to look in to going to a 6 bolt block etc.?

I am pushing over 40lb/min on a completely stock 95 GSX block.. Stock headstuds.. I went 12.60 at 24 psi on my 16g and should hit low 12s with the holset.. I am currently building a block.. The problems with these 7 bolts is defidently the rods.. The are very small and will banana or just break.. My build is pretty set on manley rods with wesico pistons.. stock crank.

I will say that there are/were alot of high horsepower stock 7 bolts out there.. I went pretty fast on stock block and I know of Paul that made 404WHP on a completely stock block as well.

Quick break down---
Pistons are good for 450 hp.. They ussually dont fail
rods are good for "400", Thats what they say.. I believe it..
Crank- good for 800+
Headgasket will pop or you head will left unless you get a nice felpro and ARP head studs when you start to get in that HP range
You will want cams...

What are your goals?? Like drag race or street machine.. Quick spooling turbo??

Get a 6 bolt and build it with eagle rods and wiesco pistons. Ive heard of stock cranks in 1000hp cars so the car is fine. You may want to get it balanced and polished but thats up to you. Look into an hx35 or hx40. You should get the head decked and if you want to port it go ahead. Aftermarket cams, springs and retainers is probably all you need. Depending on how much your budget is will depend on a lot of these parts. You can ride out the stock parts until they break or just buy it all at once like you said. The stock tranny wont like too many launches with that kind of power. You should look and see if e85 is available around you. All you need to run it is a better pump and bigger injectors. You can tune for it with dsmlink or aem. good luck

thanks a bunch guys that is the exactly the info i was looking for much appreciated

as far as goals go i am not looking for a race car or anything but i had a wrx that i poured about 50k into just to total it in a snow storm it was just awesome fun to drive around now that i am a little older and level headed i just want that feeling again but don't have use for the 4 doors now because it wont do double duty as a family car but i am limited on funds because i now have 3 kids instead of 1 and i know that a fast dsm can be built for less then 20k but as i live on Wyoming i need awd because when its warm outside i ride my bike so in short i just want a wicked fast car to go get smokes and soda

one last thing i know in the suby world the jdm blocks were much better as they were closed deck as apposed to the us blocks being open decked

with the 4g motors is there any thing special i should look for other then 6 bolt > 7 bolt motors ?

I'd go 6 bolt block, 6 bolt rods, forged pistons, tri-metal ACL bearings, stock crank, ARP Rod bolts, ARP Head Studs, MLS Headgasket. The OEM Main bolts can handle 600whp so doing ARP Mains really isn't needed. That is the setup I am doing for my car. The stock 6 bolt rods can handle 500whp. There's even a few 600whp cars on the stock 6 bolt rods. If you want, get them cryotreated.

For the head, some upgraded valve springs, valves, cams. I'd go with some 272's or maybe try the 274's drom DSMGraveyard.

For the turbo I'd do a Holset HX35 or HX40 with the Bullseye housing. There is a "Holset Results" type of thread where people share their setups and power it made. Good info there along with the umpteen other Holset threads.

For the stock trans, usually a good limit is 350whp but it depends on how you drive and if you like to launch at 5K rpm. If you get it built, I'd go with a TMZPerformance (Twicks69 on here), Shep, Jack's Transmission, or TRE. Put it with an ACT 2600 or 2900.

For the fuel, AFPR, 255 pump, some 1000cc injectors, meth injection, stock fuel rail.

The 2g exhaust manifold is pretty good but a good upgrade is the FP manifold. Also get a full 3" exhaust.

Obviously an FMIC.

For gauges, I'd get a wideband, boost gauge, and oil pressure gauge.

Tune it with DSMLink, ECMLink, AEM.

Get a good suspension setup. Can't help much here becuase I'm learning about suspension right now.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There's some good tech articles and I know one person posted a link to it. I hope this helps.
