ok first of all mods feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum. im looking at getting buying a car off a friend of mine he has bot the spyder and the rs. how reliable is the 2.4l? he only wants 3000 for the spyder and insurance is going to run me about 85 bucks vs. the rs he wants 4000 and insurance is going to cost me 106 bucks. the spyder is black and the rs is red inside and out so that would deffinetally have to change, but of course no matter what paint is going to fly eventually. i just sold him the stock wheels off my 1g so i know they are all in good shape. im familiar with the 420a engines so working on the rs wouldnt really be an issue. what is everyones opinion on which would be a more reliable family car for my DD? i have a 8 week old son and cant have something breaking down on me. i like a convertible if its shop kept but my garage is full so it would be an outside kept car and im worried about leaks from the drastic climate changes we get here in missouri. and i dont need to hear everyone saying get a turbo or a gsx this will be my third dsm and it for sure wont be my last im only 20 and already have six cars this will be my seventh and my DD. thanks in advance for everyones thoughts.

I would say the rs. I have owned a few and if you take care of them, they will last 200k+ but I never had any dealings with the 2.4

Yeah the RS. On the Spyder the top may end up getting sun bleached and the RS is an easy car to maintain. Most likely you wont be able to drive with the top down alot because of your 8wk old, I dont think its wise to do so, so you really would just be wasting a convertable.

yeah the kid and the 2.4 is whats holding me back from the drop top. of course ive always liked the hard top more anyways and its what im leaning towards. my gf just really wanted the spyder and i kind of sold the 2g i bought for her last time out from under her due to a cracked block. im still gonna have to get them side by side and compare em though. the good thing about buying it from my friend is if i end up not liking one i can trade him back for the other.

well ive got horrible credit and will be making payments so its not that horrible. i know its to much but ive been looking around and its only about 500 more than every other 2g ive found for sale around me. anyways the price isnt really the problem ### if it breaks i dont have to fix it. at least not till its paid off. also i wont get repoed if im late with my car payment. besides the convertible is in worse condtion from what ive seen. the only other car ive found for the price im giving my friend for a down payment is a huge ol caddy. im really just wondering which is more dependable. i know they have both been well maintained. and which ever one i do end up choosing will receive more love than its probably ever seen in its life time. i may only be 20 years old but everyone in my community comes to me with their car problems and so far ive only not been able to figure out one persons problem with their brakes and we have rebuilt almost everything but the hard lines so i guess they are next.

now that ive looked at kbb im leaning back towards the spyder can anyone tell me how reliable the 2.4 is? ive never even seen one a picture would be nice of a engine bay. ive been searching and searching for threads on the 2.4 but i cant find much except people trying to mod them so it must be an alright motor. I guess if i do get the spyder ill just have to buy a new car cover too.

motor wise both are very reliable, and very easy to maintain, reliablilty for a car isn't based on how it was built, but how it was maintained (excluding crankwalk and toyotas gas pedals, etc.) either car are perfect for daily use as long as the previous owner didn't skip out on replacing the common parts such as water pump, timing belt, head gasket, etc. seeing how you have a 8 week old, if your kids going to spend alot of time in the car I would get the one that is more comfortable for the kid and with more space, for stroller and such, also I would def see how warm the spyder gets compared to the rs, you don't want to take your kid out and him/her freeze and be sick all the time because you thought the spyder looked better, I don't know how warm spyders get on the inside driving 70mph but if it's up to par with the RS I'd say get the spyder, there alot more cars you can take parts off of if something goes wrong.

well as long as it doesnt have wind leak issues the cold shouldnt be that big of a deal i know it has a good heater and if i must ill put my inverter in it and put my little space heater in the back. space wise arent they the same size on the inside?

My brother used to own a spyder and there isn't as much room from what I remember as the hard tops. I would deff get the spyder I have always wanted one and I will probably get one some day. The 2.4 motor is reliable you just have to keep maintence up just like any other car.

I love my spyder. It was beat to hell. It's only broke down once, it was a coolant hose. The only issue with the top is the floating rib (2nd) bow issues. But you can get the fix kit on eBay for under $100.

well there is a gs-t spyder for sale, an hour away from me with only 63,000 miles on it. It is super clean, looks like it just came out of the factory LOL. If your interested pm me

WHy is this even in question? $4k for a 95 rs are you kidding. Thats the cost of gst's with money in to it. $3k for a spyder hell swap a 4g63 in to it. I tihnk the mounts and cross member are the same.

ok as ive mentioned i cant really be the pickiest person and i must have my own car right now im driving my moms P.O.S. firebird and i have the feeling its gonna die any day now. so please just forget the whole price thing i dont mind paying more since there is no way i can afford to get a good car with cash up front and no way i can get a car financed so this is really my only option. i mean i could fix one of my other cars but i need a running car by monday and only have a grand to spend. and there isnt really a decision on whether to get a dsm or something else when i make up my mind on buying a dsm its going to happen. and i dont want to buy a thousand dollar car only to have to repair it a month or two down the road. not to mention the rest of what i will owe him will most likely end up getting paid for in trade. last car i bought from him was a 89 honda accord traded my amp and two 12's for it and ended up selling it for 600. all in all about a 400 dollar profit would of been more but i sold it to my cousin. im not really into the turbo scene at least not until i can afford to do it the right way. im mainly looking for whats going to be the most reliable i need advice and experience on what goes wrong on both cars most often. and the day i buy it alot of maintenance will be done even if the stuff looks new. my son will be riding in the car and i do not want him to be in a P.O.S.

TO be honest neither car is going to be a good idea. The rs Is way over priced and the spyder is a perfect price but not a family car. Im only 18 but man you can't be buying a $1500 car for $4000. Both car's are realiable any car is. A stock gst gsx tsi or tsi awd is just as reliable stock. But most of these car's are modified and most of the time people who know what thier doing do all the work and money and sell it to some dumb kid. Go out and buy a 4 door car or buy a stock turboed dsm. 1G or 2G. Im gonna be honest with you. Buy a car that you feel comfortable driving with your son in the car with you. Hell I know this sound's bad but buy a 94-96 accord coupe. I know its a Honda but thats about as realible as your going to get with i guess some sport. THis is honestly a touchy subject to ask other people. Its your money your son your car your life. We can only persaude you to buy a certain one. In the end its up to you. So DO what make's you feel happy. When you know let us know. Either way we well all help you out with either car.

well if i have to i will limit it to just a family car and not let anyone sit in the front passenger seat while the kid is in the car and my gf can sit behind me. and as ive said im not in a situation to just go buy the right car ive gotta make due with what i can get and this is the only way i can get a good car. i have decided on the spyder and am hoping the car seat isnt to much of a hassle. thanks everyone
