I got a full 3" exhaust. It's soo loud. I think my neighbors complain about it. What can I add or get to make it quieter? Should I just do a whole new set up? Let me hear your options. Thanks.

What type of 3", is it like an Apexi, or a custom FULL 3" with no resonators/mufflers?
I've got a full 3" with a 3" in and dual 2.5" out flowmaster, and its got almost nothing to stop resonating.
It barely sets off alarms slowly going by cars in the parking lot, so i know it does something =)
How much room down there do you have to add a resonator? There's a couple of writeups for custom 2g exhaust, have you seen those?

The insert doesn't really work that great. I might just get some resonators. Do you know which ones will fit?

I have the delimma of quiet vs. horsepower. I own several vehicles and I try to make them as quiet as possible to keep the man away. I drive my 10sec. falcon to work at 3:45 A.M. in the summer so my neighbors are not my issue. I dont jump on it either when it's quiet time. It is a reality that works for me. I tried to get the talon quiet also @ 3" . I did a flowmaster 3" on my SVO years ago and it was way loud and sounded like ass. Took it off. My talon has Walker dynomax muffler and Pypes 5" muffler, 3" non fart-can tail pipe , muffler came from Summit . Sounds mean at full boost and 7000rpm. Just a low rumble at 850rpm with the 264/272 cams. Tres....

My buddy Matt Lafond found one overseas, he really likes his muffler, there was a thread recently on quieter mufflers. Its somewhere on here.

MOST exhaust systems without resonators and/or high flow cat arent gonna be quiet regardless of which brand muffler it is. I find that magnaflow is the quietest out of the ones I have heard.

Why are you running a 3" cat less exhaust? With or without a cat you probably don't notice a difference on a stock turbo and boost creeping must be a real nightmare.

By the way, how do you expect to pass smog in CA which is an especially high smog restriction? Even if you have a high flow cat, there will still be problems unless you have connection. And be careful about that exhaust, you can get pulled over and if they see you have no cat they will impound your car and the neighbors can call the cops because your car is a disturbance to peace. It best to cruise in to your road in neutral instead of downshifting and I know this. I have lived in CA too.

Just because it's insanely loud doesn't give you more hp.

Quick answer is no, just modify what you have.

This might help:

My neighbor has the typical bullet muffler on his EVO, and he runs the resonator that goes where the cat would normally go, the ebay style ones. I literally have to wear ear plugs to drive in his car. My car is as the tech article decribes: 2.5" downpipe into a 3" catback with a big midmuffler welded in place and no cat. One big main muffler out back and as big/long of a midmuffler you can fit up in the middle is all you need, done.

Not all 3" exhaust systems are the same. I've heard crushingly loud 3" exhausts like some of the famous DSM shops are famous for selling, and the whisper quiet ones like the Borla Hush for the WRX's.

You can have relatively quiet & high performance.

First of all, I'm not saying that a loud exhaust will give me more HP...
I'm running catless because I got this exhaust set up for free.
I don't care about smog. I can just put my stock exhaust back on anyways...
We own a smog shop. I just want a more quieter exhaust....

If all you want is a quieter exhaust then put the silencer back in. If you want to look cool also then weld on some resonators or just change exhaust. Or you could do what you said and put the stock exhaust back on.

I was thinking about putting the stock exhaust back on with the 3" downpipe. But wouldn't that give me boost creep?

question is.. are you gonna be satisfied if you put the stock exhaust back on?

I know I saw a thread on here somewhere where someone had a muffler that looked similar to the stock one, but allowed the driver to flip a switch to switch between 3" straight through the muffler to stock diameter at the outlet. I remember the muffler being fairly expensive for just a muffler, but it seems like the best possible option. Otherwise just get a couple resonators put on like others said. I have no cat, 2 resonators, and a muffler that is 3" through the center on my full 3" exhaust and it's almost too quiet for me sometimes.

EDIT: Here's the link to that thread. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/bolt-tech/345139-finally-good-quiet-muffler.html
