I have a 1998 eclipse non turbo. Its a 5 speed manual. I can shift it into every gear except for first, it started doing it aftershifting from first to second and made a grinding noise. It physically wont shift into where first should be, my shifter just bounces off of it. Is my transmission shot? Every other gear works fine.

You might have taken out first gear. Are you saying from a dead stop you can't or driving around and coming to a stop when your still rolling?

The syncro just allows ease of shifting while the tranny is running. It sounds to me you blew the gear. Check your tranny oil for metal chunks.

It all depends on what your looking to do. If your needs will be to eventually get yourself a built tranny might as well do things right the first time. But then again if your short on cash just get a stock rebuild.

I'm not sure how much around you it is. But over at strictly modified by me they have a deal for $550 stock rebuilds not including price on broken parts. so I'd say around 6 to 650 all depends where you go

Why don't you first find out the exact problem before you throw money around. Second, I would find a transmission shop (good reputation) and ask them how much it would be to put in a new syncro, gear, or whatever else is needed. Should be cheaper that way. You'll also have to add in the labor cost of removal and tear down. If you plan on getting another transmission, (used) you won't know the condition but new is the way to go. Jacks Transmissions has great products and is affordable. Warranty is top notch as well, 1 year/10k miles.

Its not that bad. Just search up a vfaq to have handy. clear out everything in the way of the tranny. pull off right wheel and axles, unbolt tranny from motor.
