I have my car finally together, i will start it as soon as this question is answered, ill get a timing light too, but that doesn't help completly because i dont have a logger or anything. So, on MY 1G CAS there is a bolt mark/depression that was made from the factory line (Im Assuming, although i cant really see them actually tightening so hard, it makes a mark in the metal)

Does anyone know where DEAD center would be on the CAS?? The mark in the metal from the old bolt is NOT anywhere near the middle of adjustment on my black top hall CAS.

So in the pic, this is where the mark is at....is this 0 base timing, or the 5 degree advance that i need, the cam is backwards by the way. Thanks

What you want to be sure of is that the timing marts for the CAS are correct. In that picture it looks like you might have it 180* off if you were to install it like that.

Lol steve, i got that picture from magnus's website, i know thats 180* out at that picture. I want to know how to set the base timing without a datalogger. I mean, in older cars id put the timing light on a spark wire, turn the distributor until i get the timing i liked...Is it the same way, just turn CAS like a distributor?? What is the factory base timing, or what should i shoot for, (i have a decent setup). Thanks

ok, may sound dumb, but how do i ground the timing connector??

Also can i go any farther in timing, will 10* advance kill me..

There's a plug on the firewall behind the battery. A quick search on DSMtuners came up with this handy tutorial: Engine Timing

If you need any more super basic information like where to put the gas, there's a search box at the top of the page. Sorry, couldn't resist LOL.

At ten degrees advance, your ECU will just have to pull 5 degrees more timing than before. I wouldn't attempt it with no way to log.

LOL thanks, i searched all night and everything says i need a logger, ive timed older cars, just not this type. Thanks though.

The ecu has no idea what his base timing is set to. It automatically assumes it's at 5* BTDC. If he sets it to 10* BTDC, then he will have have an extra 5* timing added in, which will most likely, lead to knocking. the 1G timing curve is VERY aggressive. Most guys have to actually pull timing OUT at 6k rpm due to knock. Leave base timing at 5* BTDC and go from there.

Last time I checked using a logger to check the base timing is a no-no...it pretty much disables the timing connecter you got to ground...

But someone please correct me if I'm wrong.....and I will edit my post
