Hey everyone. First time posting, I've been looking through threads, searching to find the answer myself. I have been stuck for about a week. Right now i have a 1997 Eagle Talon ESi and saw this ad for a 1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. I've talked with the guy for a week, he seems pretty interested in my Talon.

The 92 Talon has 25k miles on a rebuild, new 14b Turbo, new spark plugs and timing belt, aftermarket boost gauge, and powder coated rims. Interior is pretty nice for the age.

My Talon has 154xxx miles, AEM V2 Intake, DC Sport Headers, and a nice Pioneer stereo deck, new clutch and tires were put on in the summer.

I have been wanting a Turbo'd DSM for quite some time now, I can't seem to sell my Talon, I have been trying for 3 months so I could get a Turbo'd DSM. Is this my great opportunity to get one? I have wanted a 1G for the looks (imo i like the 1G Talon look) and the lighter body and the crank walk of the 2G.

Sound like a good deal? I think so, but I kinda have been on the edge. What do you guys think I should do?

I do have some friends that work on cars, just doesnt have all the tools and such to do repairs. I do not have AAA, nor do I know of anyone with AAA. Sounds like a good idea, just not right now.

I guess i will have to wait till next weekend and hope he still has it.

Thanks for your help everyone!

they dont need tools if they are familiar enough with cars they should be able to figure out what is wrong.t hats where friend who know come in. ppl bring cars to me or i go to cars. it is cheaper then taking a car to a shop. btw... a 100$ craftsman tool kit ( get one on sale.. LOL) seriously can disassemble a whole car with one of those things. just takes a while and some headbanging. you should invest.

Alright guys I have been looking around. Doing some research. The oil dipstick did in fact pop out after driving, so would that lead to all the oil in the engine. There's a bunch on the alternator from what I remember. Even ontop of the throttle body there was some. It did smoke after driving as well. Would all that oil just be from the oil dipstick shooting out and something with the oil pan?

of course man, and fyi that could be a big boost leak believe it or not. but thats rare to find on 1g dsm, alot do that. so if it was running like crap while in boost that could be why.

i just got my 2nd 92 talon tsi awd and they r great and fast cars even when they r stock.. they seem to hold a nice value even wen they r modded and or stock.. and i would do it no doubt..

watch that the exhaust mani doesn't get to covered, it could catch fire, I had this happen when my oil filter housing nipple backed out.

Crimp the top of the dipstick tube and it should hold the dipstick in. The seal on the dipstick is probably just worn out.

dude, having the oil dipstick shoot out after driving it could be the cause of BAD piston rings! (I.E. Blowby) Which could be from not breaking the engine in the right way when it was rebuilt. I wouldn't buy it unless you do a compression test and a leakdown first. Or you might be buying a new engine for it/rebuilding it AGAIN...

Remember this is your daily driver. I dont mean to discourage you from the deal. I am just looking out for you man.

Yes the dipstick could definitely cause all that oil to get everywhere and the engine to smoke. It has happened to me before. A quick remedy you could try is just to clean the rubber seal and get all the oil off it and also try to wipe off some the oil where the rubber seal sits at in the dipstick hole. This will give it a little more grip and maybe won't popout anymore. If this still doesnt work just get a new dipstick or just crimp the top part of the dipstick hole just little bit to pinch the dipstick in there (but not too much to where you can't pull it out) then that problem should be solved. I say go for the trade :thumb:

I would go for it if someone gave me that same opportunity for my 97 RS. I've had the same issue with my dipstick and i did a compression test and everything was fine. I just crimped the end and haven't had the problem since. Good luck.

Im not exactly sure.

I have mixed feelings about it.

I really want to do it, but I'm trying to save up for a TSI or GSX, I have 800 already, should i do the trade plus his 350 and just fix it up?

Ah im in a bind here.

Agreed, take the extra plus what you have and you'll be able to fix it and maybe even grab a few mods for it.

+1... Oil leaks can be tricky to track down sometimes, but a dip stick blowout can cause oil everywhere (trust me, lots of experience here LOL) if you crimp the top of the dipstick tube a LITTLE, it will hold it in better. The rubber on the end gets hard and brittle over time and doesn't do a great job holding it in there anymore.

Trade away, i would in a heartbeat.

this is absolutely amazing the kid says the dipstick blows out under positive manifold pressure and guys say go for it. ROFL

listen to regilator231 (sp?)

My dipstick used to pop out. I did a compression test and a leakdown test and both of those turned up ok. PCV valve might be a bit worn out, since it doesn't get a 100% seal. I don't even know if new ones seal perfect.

You could probably pull the PCV valve off, check it (blow through it and make sure it seals - it's a check valve), and put it back on in about 5 minutes even if you didn't know what you were doing.

I crimped the tube ONLY AFTER I knew it wasn't a major problem. That fixed it.

Oil leaks I've had have come from:
1. Bad crush washer on the turbo oil feed from head (coated half the engine bay in oil).
2. Turbo oil return line loose at turbo end (coated underside of car in oil - lost 1 quart a week)
3. Blown front main seal (coated timing belt and that side of engine in oil)
4. Turbo oil feed from oil filter housing (coated that corner of underside in oil)
5. Dipstick popped out (oil everywhere under hood - girlfriend drove for 10 min after it popped out on her when she borrowed my car - good story there)
6. Oil cap seal (old rubber had dried from heat and was leaking oil into the spark plug well)

So, there's a few places you could check.

Alright guys, well im going to go take it for a drive again and take it by a trustworthy shop and see how much damage is done an what not. if the repairs are under $350, Im totally doing it.

Will keep your guys posted and thanks again to everyone, you have helped my decision a bunch!

Well, I'm going to go look at it on Tuesday again and have the shop look at it. I do remember one thing, the Idle Screw was broken and he did have a replacement, but it was broken into the manifold? The idle was a little off, but i imagine from the screw. How hard is that to get out? I would imagine making a slot cut in it and using a flat head to remove it? The timing cover was a little loose and making a noise but pushed toward the block it was fine. Again i ASSUME nothing major there. Tuesday I think I will be driving home a 1g DSM :D.

Can't wait. This will be my 3rd DSM and I'm only 17 haha.
1. 93 Eclipse GS (15)
2. 97 Talon ESi (16)
3. *Soon to be if everything checks out* 92 Talon TSi

I love DSMs, can't get away from them!

Will post what the shop says, but I think, I'm going through with it with his cash on the deal.

Once again can't say thanks enough to everyone who posted and helped me out, and I hope the Idle Screw is easy to get out.
