Well, i did the swap on my car, took the old N/T tranny out and put a good turbo tranny in it along with a brand new fidanza aluminum flywheel, fidanza 3.2 clutch, new throw-out bearing, release fork, pivot ball.. So i got it all finished this weekend, started the car and let her warm up for a good 10 minutes, pulled the clutch in and tried to put it in gear and all it did was grind. I didnt even put it all the way in because i didnt want to force it into gear. So i thought to myself well shit now whats wrong with this damn thing :banghead: so i got under the dash and adjusted the clutch, it made the pedal feel a little better but still grinded just as bad! I tried bleeding the clutch but didnt have anyone at the time to help me out so i gave up for the night, and i had already been working on it for 14 hours. I also re-used the bracket off of the N/T tranny that holds the shift cables in place, a shop also told me that it was bent but i cant really tell, could that be the problem? :hmm: I really need this car done soon before my dad has a heart attack because i have his truck! Thanks guys

What year transmission did you put in the car? If it is a 90, you need to change the shifter arms and brackets. Look at the post linked below to see if the brackets are the same or different. Basically all you would have to do if they are different, is change them over from your old transmission. And before you ask, yes, they are the same betwen turbo and non turbo.

So when you push the clutch in and try to shift all it does is grind?? I think you put the clutch disc in backwards

It was a 91 tranny that i put in it, unsure of the old one that was in it, im trying to get a hold of the previous owner to find out because the tranny is in minnesota and im in illinois.

The clutch disk has a sticker on it that said flywheel side and pressure plate side so im pretty sure that i put it on the right way.
you can bleed the clutch yourself, i did a write up on it in the tech section awhile ago.

That really works? You just pump the brakes as shown in your thread?

Any other input on this guys??

Just eliminating possibilities because if you put the clutch in with the thickest part of the hub facing the flywheel the clutch will not fully engage.

Ya i thought of that too but im 99 perent positive its in the right way, i tripple made sure that everything was lined up before installing everything. I wonder if those cables and brackets really make that much more of a difference, i talked to the old owner and he thinks its a 90 tranny that was in the car before. I know of a way i can diagnose if it is a shift linkage issue though.

If you click on the link in my first post, it shows you th edifferences in the brackets. It is pretty easy to identify the 90 and 91 brackets. The shifter arms on the otherhand need to be measured.

But my question is would that cause the car to not want to go into gear and grind? Awsome, quick replies thanks guys

Definetly!

If the shifter assembly and cables are 91, and the bracket and arms are 90, then the shifter arms would not have full throw. Inturn, this would not allow the gears to completely ingage which would cause grinding.

Just ask anyone that had ever put a 90 transmission in with out changeing anything, and alot of people have done it with out even realizing it. ;)

Thanks a bunch fivestar you rule!!:hellyeah: Ill definetly check it out soon here and let you know whats going on! Anything else i should look for?

Put the car in gear push in the clutch and then try turning it over. Be safe and make sure the car isn't going to drive through the garage door when it starts if the clutch is dragging.

I would check it all out. Ther is possiblilities that it is not the brackets, Arms, cables, or even the clutch.

A very common problem with these cars is the clutch pedal assembly itself. The arm and bushings will wear out and cause a problem with the mastercylinder. Basically , when this problem occours, when you push the clutch, there is a lag between how far it move in regards to how far it actually moves the mastercylinder arm.

Search a4round, I know there has been countless writeups, and post about how to fix it, and where to get the parts. Also, Buscher or Shepp have the replacement pedal assembly if this is the case.

Alright, well i could see the release fork move alot when i looked so im hoping thats not the problem. Ill check it out though. Thanks guys i appreciate it. :thumb:
