Hi guys,

So I was looking in my 92 today and what do i find but a 90 shifter in it, check the trans and it has a 90 shifter bracket as well. When I checked the vin on the transmission the 10th digit was a P which denotes that it is a 93.

Now my up/down shifter cable is semi broken and i need to replace it, but now i do not know if i have a 90 cable or a 91-94 cable, is there a way to tell without having them side by side?

Has anyone had this combo before of a 91-94 trans and a 90 everything else? At this point i don't know if i can just get some 1990 cables or if i really need to switch everything to 91-94.

Thanks for your input

from all the searching I've done today about this I'm fairly confident that 90 cables will work.

Thanks for the link, a lot of info in there; i searched "cable" so i never got that link in my search.

I ended up using some 90 cables (still have no idea why someone put 90 linkage in my 92 ???) and then i drilled a whole in my shifter arm on the trans and made another spot for the cable to go onto so that now the cable is straight, shifts are A LOT better.

No problem. I have been holding on to it for a year or two b/c I knew I would need all that info one day. Ironically enough, I still don't know exactly what my car needs to shift perfectly.

Do you have a picture of what you did to the shifter arm & cable bracket? I would like some ideas. I gotta get this thing right before the track tomorrow night or I won't be winning the "quick 8" and getting my $200. :sneaky:

Sorry was really busy last night and did not get a chance to take a picture.
Notice how nice and straight the up/down cable now is!

What i did was i drilled a hole in the selector arm and put in a bolt.
If you have access to a welder then welding a pin in there like stock would be better.

I discovered that you want a little bit of slack in the linkage so just tightening a bolt and nut down tight on the cable wont work well.

Here is the order of what i used from bottom to top (i got everything from Ace/True Value) :
1/4" bolt, washer, (the shifter selector arm), washer, 1/4 ID 5/16" OD bronze bushing, (i put the cable on over the bushing), another washer, and a lock nut

For the washer b/t the selector arm and the bushing you will have to find one that fits just right so that it goes around the bolt, but does not let the bushing go through it.
