All this summer I have been watching for good deals on performance parts to put in my car. Now that it is getting colder out I have started to install them. I found a good deal on a ITP 3200stall converter so I bought it. I figured I should also rebuild it. now that I have all the parts I pulled the tranny and the converter is 1/2" to tall:ohdamn: apparently the japanese tranny is diff from the American tranny. now should I sell the converter and get the other converter rebuilt or find an American tranny.

They should be the same if for the same car. More likely you have a 1g transmission and 2g convertor or vice-versa.

when I bought the car the motor and tranny were both no good so I got them from tiger Japanese. I phoned ITP and they said they were different. I will check the # on the tranny. I do know it is a W4A33.

W4A33 is used in both 1G and 2G cars. Course its also used in Gallants, Colts, 3000gt, Hyundai Sonata and probably more im forgetting.

But if IPT said they are different, I guess they would know. Sucks ### I have a JDM auto transmission with a restall and shift kit waiting on my new motor. I didnt have any problems fitting the convertor into my transmission though. But both of them came from the same car. I sure hope my convertor bolts to my flexplate. Guess ill be checking that tomorrow.

On mine the converter bolted up but there was a 1/2" gap between the motor & tranny.

Why did you get a JDM transmission anyway? The only reason to get one is for the gear ratio, which you can't use it anyways unless you get the transfer case, and rear end or parts swapped in the transmission to correct the final drive ratio.

When I bought the car it was in pieces. and the guy didn't know what he was doing. (I'm starting to think I don't ether now) anyway the cv's were cut in two with a torch stuff was missing. so I thought living in Canada getting a motor and tranny from there would be the cheapest and easiest, there is not much for parts here and shipping kills. I did not know about the gear ratio difference. the tc came with the tranny but I did not touch the rear diff. It doesn"t seem to have different gear ratios, no chirping of tires or funny wear. No clunks or grinds. thanks allot for the input. how do I go about checking if they are the same ratio?

$400 shipped with converter, transmission, and transfer case was the reasoning for me. Low mileage 1g awd automatic transmissions are hard to find, esp for a good price from a reputable seller.

To the OP. Are you sure you had the transmission in correctly? Like maybe it was off the dowl pins a bit or one was cockeyed. My best friend confirmed with me that he put a JDM transmission in his 94 automatic awd and had no problems.

Maybe its just something different with the 2g cars. But once I get my rotating assmebly in my new block, Im gonna try to mate my JDM transmission to the motor while its out of the car just to be sure.

Yea I tried 3 times. I also layd the converters on the floor and the adm converter was 5/8' taller in the body. When I phoned ITP and gave them the # off their converter they said it was the right one. the jdm tranny dose work fine in the car but when I got the adm coverter is when I ran into my problem. So they do work just you can't mix & match.

I did some measuring and found out that the adm torque converter laying on its side from the floor to the top of the collar has a measurement of 5 3/16 the jdm tc has a measurement of 4 5/8.
